The Land

This Premier Cru comes from the Clos de la Chateniere vineyard in Saint-Aubin, a 1.25-hectare site planted to Chardonnay in 1964. Overlooking the village of Gamay, the vineyard sits on a steep, 40% south-facing slope, with shallow, stony soil rich in iron oxides over a hard limestone bedrock. This terroir, with its old vines and ideal exposure, is meticulously farmed with sustainable and organic practices. Domaine Hubert Lamy is renowned for its hands-on approach in the vineyard, embracing high-density planting to yield smaller, concentrated grapes, and employing techniques like Gréffe Passar grafting and non-hedging to encourage natural vine balance and optimal fruit maturation.

The Wine

The 2022 Clos de la Chateniere is a pure Chardonnay, crafted with minimal intervention to showcase its terroir. The winemaking process involves crushing and pressing, settling overnight, and ambient yeast fermentation. The wine then ages on its lees for an extended average of 24 months in mostly used 300 and 600L barrels, followed by an additional 6 months in tank. Fining and filtering are kept to a minimum, and SO2 is only added during aging, typically after the first year. Expect a wine that is a clear expression of Saint-Aubin, with a focus on minerality and finesse, and a structure that is both elegant and age-worthy.

The People

Domaine Hubert Lamy is a family estate with a long history in Burgundy, dating back to 1640. Founded in 1973 by Hubert Lamy, the domaine expanded significantly in the 1990s under his stewardship. Hubert's son, Olivier Lamy, joined the domaine in 1995, bringing new ideas and methods learned from working and tasting internationally. Today, Domaine Hubert Lamy encompasses 18.5 hectares across prestigious appellations like Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Santenay, producing around 110,000 bottles annually. The estate is known for its meticulous vineyard work and its modern vathouse, built in 1981 and expanded in 2003, which facilitates a gravity-flow system for white winemaking and traditional vinification methods for both reds and whites. The Lamy family's dedication to quality and their long history in Burgundy are clearly evident in their wines.
