The Land
Washington makes some of the most serious Rhone-style reds in the United States, and it does so in a high desert. The Columbia Valley is a vast, arid stretch of eastern Washington shaped by ancient Ice Age floods, with sandy, well-drained soils, long summer daylight, and dramatic drops in temperature at night. Kind Stranger draws Grenache and Mourvedre from warm, south-facing sites in this landscape, where the heat ripens the fruit and the cold nights lock in acidity. It is an unlikely place for a pale, dry rose, which is exactly what makes it work.
The Wine
A dry Provencal-style rose built from Grenache and Mourvedre, the classic southern French rose duo, grown in the Columbia Valley. It is made as an intentional rose, direct-to-press, meaning the grapes are picked for pink wine and pressed straight away rather than bled off from a red fermentation. That gives it a pale color and a crisp, focused profile, around 12% alcohol, with citrus, red berry, and a mineral, dry finish. This is the all-day rose category done right: light on its feet, genuinely dry, and refreshing enough to drink through a long afternoon.
The People
Kind Stranger is a project of Andrew Latta, one of Washington's respected winemakers, who came up through the restaurant world as a busser and then head sommelier before turning to winemaking. He worked at K Vintners before founding his own Latta Wines in 2011, focusing on Rhone varieties across Washington. Kind Stranger carries a charitable mission: proceeds from the wine support women's and children's shelters in the Washington area. It is a serious rose with a generous purpose behind it.
Food Pairing
Treat this as a true all-purpose summer wine. Pour it with fish tacos, grilled shrimp, a big salad with vinaigrette, or a spread of charcuterie and olives. Its dry crispness cuts through fried and salty food, while the light red-berry fruit keeps it easy alongside picnic fare and grilled vegetables. Keep it cold and pour it often.
