The Land
The Douro is Port country, all steep schist terraces baking in the summer heat above the river, better known for sweet fortified wine and powerful reds than for anything pale and dry. A crisp, fresh rosé from here is a genuine surprise, and it is made from Touriga Nacional, the same grape that goes into the greatest Ports. The trick is elevation: the fruit comes from some of the highest-altitude Touriga in the Douro, where cooler temperatures preserve acidity and tension while keeping the grape's floral, mineral personality intact. It is the Douro reimagined as a source of bright, saline pink wine.
The Wine
100% Touriga Nacional, Portugal's most celebrated red grape, picked early from high-elevation Douro vineyards and made in a pale, dry style with gentle pressing and cool fermentation in stainless steel to protect freshness. The color is light pink with cherry glints, and the nose leads with ripe strawberry and cherry blossom. On the palate it is juicy and fresh, with sour and Bing cherry, macerated strawberry, a whisper of white pepper spice, and a saline snap on the finish. There is real nerve and tension here, more than most rosé offers, which comes straight from the altitude of the vineyards.
The People
Maçanita Vinhos is the Douro project of siblings Joana and Antonio Maçanita, founded in 2010 after a local family invited the two ambitious young winemakers to make wine in the region. Antonio is one of Portugal's most influential modern winemakers, working across Alentejo, the Azores, the Douro, and Madeira, while Joana leads the Douro cellar. Their shared bottlings carry the tagline brother and sister, one wine, two winemakers, a nod to the collaborative spirit behind them. The focus throughout is on freshness, altitude, and the specific character of Portuguese grapes rather than power for its own sake.
Food Pairing
This is a versatile warm-weather rosé with the acidity to handle real food. Pour it with grilled sardines, a seafood rice, a plate of presunto and olives, or a watermelon and feta salad. Its saline freshness is made for grilled fish and shellfish, while the light cherry fruit keeps it easy alongside charcuterie and summer vegetables. Serve it well chilled on a hot afternoon.
