The Land

At the eastern edge of the Mâconnais, the village of Verzé sits quietly at 350–410 meters above sea level, its vineyards turned eastward to catch the morning sun. While Chardonnay dominates here, a few pockets of Gamay still cling to the hillsides—an echo of the grape’s historical exile from the noble Pinot lands further north. These slopes, rich in limestone and streaked with veins of marl and clay, lend a cool, mineral backbone to the wines, a tension that’s distinct from the rounder styles found further south. Though technically Burgundy, this corner of Verzé shares a kinship with Beaujolais, and it’s here that Gamay whispers back with clarity and precision.

The Wine

Delfaud’s Mâcon-Verzé Rouge is 100% Gamay, and it’s a wine that balances authenticity with lift. Made from organically farmed vines—some up to 55 years old—this wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged with minimal intervention, allowing the varietal and site to take the lead. In the glass, it shimmers with red cherry, cranberry, and crushed granite, with a savory herbal edge and gentle grip. Fermented and aged in tank, it shows off the verve of high-elevation Gamay: bright acidity, fine tannins, and a mineral structure that frames the fruit without weighing it down. It’s pure, fresh and deeply drinkable—albeit with a hint of rusticity.

The People

Nicolas Delfaud is part of a new wave of vignerons bringing humility and focus back to the vineyards of southern Burgundy. Originally from the suburbs of Paris, he left a career in hospitality to pursue winemaking, moving to the Mâcon with his two children in 2009. After hands-on training at Château des Rontets and a formal education at Davayé, he quietly launched his domaine in 2015—working out of a makeshift garage winery, guided and encouraged by the Bret Brothers. Since then, he has steadily built a reputation for wines that are honest, expressive, and full of life. With just 4 hectares of vines, all under organic conversion, Delfaud is not chasing scale or trend—he’s chasing purity. His belief is simple but exacting: if you care for the vines, the wine will speak. And in the case of this Gamay, it speaks with energy, restraint, and an unmistakable sense of place.

The Chalonnaise and Mâconnais, located in the southern part of Burgundy, are regions known for their approachable and characterful wines, both red and white. The Mâconnais is especially celebrated for its Chardonnay, producing white wines with a rounded texture and a core of bright fruit and minerality. The Chalonnaise, though also known for Chardonnay, sees great use of Pinot Noir and Aligoté, with a focus on freshness and vibrancy. While often overshadowed by the Côte d'Or, these regions offer a unique blend of tradition and value, showcasing a diversity of terroirs and styles, while still maintaining the overall character and grace that is Burgundy.

Burgundy - Chalonnaise & Maconnais

A red wine grape most associated with Beaujolais, Gamay makes fresh, fruity red wines with berry and violet aromas. It is grown around the world outside of France where it is often a darker and less tannic cousin to Pinot Noir in cool climate regions such as Oregon and Victoria.
