The Land

Montefalco, in the heart of Umbria, is home to Sagrantino, one of Italy’s most powerful and tannic grape varieties. Paolo Bea’s vineyards sit at 400 meters above sea level, rooted in a mix of clay and limestone that retains moisture while allowing for slow, even ripening. The region’s continental climate—hot summers, cool autumns, and significant diurnal shifts—helps balance Sagrantino’s intense structure with freshness and complexity.

The Wine

“Pagliaro” is 100% Sagrantino, sourced from Bea’s best vineyard site, fermented with native yeasts and aged for 46 months in large neutral oak casks before resting further in bottle. Deep and brooding, it explodes with black fruit, dried herbs, tobacco, and earth, all framed by the variety’s signature firm tannins and gripping structure. Despite its power, there’s remarkable energy and clarity—lifted acidity and an almost paradoxical finesse that keeps it from feeling heavy. This is a wine built for long aging, evolving for decades in the cellar.

The People

Paolo Bea is a legend in natural winemaking, a steadfast traditionalist who has defined Montefalco’s artisanal approach for generations. His wines are farmed organically and biodynamically, with no synthetic treatments and minimal intervention in the cellar. The focus is always on transparency—no fining, no filtration, and nothing added or taken away—allowing Sagrantino to express itself in its most raw and authentic form. “Pagliaro” is a true benchmark, capturing the soul of Montefalco and the uncompromising philosophy of one of Italy’s most revered producers.
