The Land

The Basarin vineyard sits in the Neive township at the northeastern edge of the Barbaresco DOCG, on the Tortonian and Helvetian clay-limestone marl soils that give the appellation its depth and aromatic complexity. Basarin is one of Sottimano's five named cru sites, and the fruit from the youngest and most recently planted vines here is what fills the Langhe Nebbiolo rather than the Barbaresco. The distinction is a DOC classification matter, not a geographic one: same soil, same site, same farming, shorter time in oak.

The Wine

100% Nebbiolo from the Basarin vineyard in Neive, declassified to Langhe DOC from younger vine fruit. Certified organic, fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats. Aged in used oak for a shorter period than the estate's cru Barbarescos, which spend 20-22 months in large cask. The result shows Nebbiolo's aromatic character without requiring years to open: dried rose, tar, iron, dried cherry, and a thread of licorice, with tannins that are real but already integrated. A useful entry point into one of the Barbaresco zone's most respected estates, and a serious wine in its own right.

The People

Sottimano is a family estate in Neive, run by Rino Sottimano and his son Andrea across 20 hectares in the Barbaresco zone. Their five single-vineyard Barbarescos from Cottà, Currà, Fausoni, Pajoré, and Basarin have become benchmark expressions of terroir within the appellation. The estate is certified organic, farming with permanent cover crops between vine rows and native yeasts in the cellar. All wines are unfined and unfiltered. The Langhe Nebbiolo is the Sottimano family's invitation to meet these vineyards before the Barbaresco clock starts. Imported by Skurnik Wines.

Food Pairing

The Langhe Nebbiolo lands between serious and casual in exactly the right way: pasta with wild boar ragu, risotto with Italian sausage and Parmigiano, braised chicken thighs with porcini and red wine, or a board of cured meats and aged Piemontese cheeses. Open thirty minutes before serving.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Italy - Piedmont

Nebbiolo, a prestigious grape from Italy's Piedmont region, is celebrated for its profound truffle and rose aromas, complex flavors, and ability to age gracefully thanks to strong acidity and tannins, producing the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines.
