The Land

The Vietti Barbera D’Alba Vigna Scarrone 2021 is a single-vineyard Barbera, sourced from the Vigna Scarrone cru in Castiglione Falletto, within the Barolo zone. This vineyard, planted to Barbera, is situated in one of the most famous areas for Barolo, demonstrating the potential of Barbera in this prestigious terroir. Vigna Scarrone is a historic site, known for producing Barbera that expresses the unique character of the “land of Barolo.” Whereas most producers would have opted to rip out the Barbera in favor of Nebbiolo, Vietti has maintained this top cru as Barbera.

The Wine

This 100% Barbera is crafted to showcase the full potential of the variety in the Barolo region. The wine is aged for one year using a combination of stainless steel tanks, large oak casks, and barriques, and then matured in the bottle for another four months. Expect a wine that stands on its own, demonstrating the depth and complexity of Barbera from this exceptional site. It is a wine that balances richness with a vibrant acidity and structure, showing a clear expression of the terroir.

The People

Vietti, located in the heart of the Langhe hills in Castiglione Falletto, is a winery with a history dating back to the late 1800s. Founded by Carlo Vietti, the estate's turning point came with Alfredo Currado in the mid-20th century, whose innovations helped revolutionize Piedmont winemaking. For many years, Alfredo's son Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena Penna carried on his legacy, contributing to Vietti's status as one of Italy's finest wine labels. While Luca Currado and Elena Penna resigned from Vietti in January 2023, the winery continues its dedication to quality under the ownership of the Krause family. The existing winemaking team and administrative staff remain in place, with Franco Denari now serving as director and Beppe Caviola continuing as consulting oenologist, ensuring Vietti's ongoing commitment to excellence and its heritage of sustainable agriculture.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Piedmont

Piedmont's 2nd red grape behind Nebbiolo, Barbera is easy to enjoy and versitile with its low tannins and fleshy fruit. High acidity also makes it food-friendly, and flavors range from tart red berries to exotically ripe purple fruits.
