The Land

The Vietti Barolo "Castiglione" 2020 is crafted from a selection of grapes sourced from some of the best Grand Cru vineyards within the Barolo zone, all located around Castiglione Falletto. While named after the commune where the Vietti winery is situated, the "Castiglione" bottling is a blend from approximately fifteen different crus, including Bricco Fiasco, Bussia, Fossati, and Ravera. The vineyards are located in the communes of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte, Barolo, and Novello, and are planted on a mix of clay and limestone soils. Vines range in age from 7 to 40 years, planted between 1978 and 2011.

The Wine

This 2020 Barolo "Castiglione" is 100% Nebbiolo, made with a focus on expressing the complexity of the vintage and the diverse terroirs from which it is sourced. Fermentation is natural, using indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged for 24-30 months in oak. Expect a truly remarkable expression of Barolo, year after year. It is a wine that seeks to show the classic structure and power of Barolo, while remaining approachable and a remarkable value for a wine of this pedigree.

The People

Vietti, located in the heart of the Langhe hills in Castiglione Falletto, is a winery with a history dating back to the late 1800s. Founded by Carlo Vietti, the estate's turning point came with Alfredo Currado in the mid-20th century, whose innovations helped revolutionize Piedmont winemaking. For many years, Alfredo's son Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena Penna carried on his legacy, contributing to Vietti's status as one of Italy's finest wine labels. While Luca Currado and Elena Penna resigned from Vietti in January 2023, the winery continues its dedication to quality under the ownership of the Krause family. The existing winemaking team and administrative staff remain in place, with Franco Denari now serving as director and Beppe Caviola continuing as consulting oenologist, ensuring Vietti's ongoing commitment to excellence and its heritage of sustainable agriculture.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Piedmont

Nebbiolo, a prestigious grape from Italy's Piedmont region, is celebrated for its profound truffle and rose aromas, complex flavors, and ability to age gracefully thanks to strong acidity and tannins, producing the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines.
