The Land:
The Poderi Aldo Conterno estate is located in Bussia, at the very heart of the Barolo wine region in Monforte d’Alba. This historic vineyard spans 25 hectares, all meticulously cultivated and exclusively vinifying its own grapes. Sitting at an elevation of 350 to 400 meters, the vineyards are positioned South and South-West, ensuring optimal sun exposure. The soil, composed of clayey marls, limestone, and layers of sand, contributes to the deep structure and elegance of the wines. Known for low yields, the estate’s production is limited to just 90,000 bottles annually, with a focus on quality over quantity. The harvest begins in mid-September, entirely manual, with a strict selection process to ensure only the finest grapes are used.

The Wine:
The Langhe Rosso Quartetto is a blend of Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah, each variety contributing to this unique wine. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October, with a meticulous selection process ensuring only the best fruit reaches the winery. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with the must remaining in contact with the skins for 8 to 10 days at a controlled temperature of 24 to 26°C. This technique extracts color, tannins, and flavor while preserving freshness. After fermentation, the wine spends several months in steel tanks with multiple rackings before being aged in wood, where it matures gracefully. The resulting wine is vibrant yet refined, with flavors of red and dark fruit, subtle spice, and a velvety texture. The natural acidity and structure from the Nebbiolo are complemented by the elegance of Pinot Noir and the smoothness of Merlot, leading to a long, harmonious finish. As per family tradition, the wine is neither clarified nor filtered.

The People:
The Conterno family remains at the helm of this prestigious estate, with Aldo’s three sons—Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo—continuing the family’s winemaking legacy. Working from tradition but open to modern innovations, the brothers maintain a deep respect for the land and a commitment to producing wines that reflect the unique character of Bussia. Following the philosophy of their father, they focus on small yields, hands-on vineyard management, and natural winemaking techniques to make wines of exceptional purity and depth.
