The Land
Vinho Verde takes its name not from a color but from youth: "green wine," made to be drunk fresh and young. The region sits in the Minho, the wet green northwest corner of Portugal, hard against the Atlantic and the Spanish border. Rainfall here is among the highest in the country, the light is soft, and granite bedrock runs under most of the vineyards. That combination of cool ocean air, damp granite soils, and a long mild growing season is what gives these wines their low alcohol, bright acidity, and faint natural spritz. For a rosé it means a wine built on freshness rather than weight.
The Wine
A rosé of Espadeiro and Touriga Nacional, fermented in stainless steel to hold its freshness. It pours a bright framboise pink and carries crushed strawberry and raspberry, red currant, and a squeeze of lime. At 10.5% alcohol with 8 grams of residual sugar balanced against firm acidity, it lands just off-dry, with the light natural fizz that defines Vinho Verde lifting the finish. Espadeiro is the traditional rosé grape of the Minho, prized for bright color and red-fruit aroma; the splash of Touriga Nacional adds depth and a bit of structure. Low in alcohol and high in refreshment, meant to be poured cold and often.
The People
Quinta das Arcas is a family estate founded by António Esteves Monteiro, who set up the winery in 1985 to bottle wine from vineyards his family had spent the previous decade consolidating and replanting. Today the estate farms roughly 200 hectares across the Vinho Verde region and bottled its first certified organic wine in 2012, part of a long-stated focus on lower-impact farming. Winemaking across the Arca Nova range is handled by Fernando Machado and Henrique Lopes. The estate has since expanded south to the Alentejo, but its foundation remains here in the Minho, where Arca Nova was the label that first carried the family name to market.
Food Pairing
Built for summer eating. Pour it with grilled shrimp skewers, a platter of charcuterie and olives on a hot afternoon, salmon poke with avocado and lime, or the producer's own suggestion of monkfish in a light mushroom sauce. The low alcohol, bright acidity, and touch of spritz make it a natural aperitif and an easy match for salads, sushi, and anything off the grill. Serve it well chilled.
