The Land
The Benanti Etna Rosso 2022 is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, sourced from Benanti's vineyards on the northern, southeastern, and southwestern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. These vineyards, with vines ranging from 10 to 60 years old, are located on volcanic soils, rich in minerals, and are carefully cultivated with a focus on sustainability. The different exposures offer a unique complexity and a clear "sense of place" to the wines.
The Wine
This wine offers an approachable view into the wines of Etna. The 2022 bottling is a pale ruby color, with an ethereal and intense nose displaying red fruit notes. The palate is balanced, dry, and medium-bodied, with a noticeable minerality, pleasant acidity, and saline notes. A mix of stainless steel and used French oak barriques are used for elevage, with 80% of the wine remaining in stainless steel. It is a wine that seeks to show the elegance and structure of Etna with a focus on purity, and is designed to be an affordable selection.
The People
Winemaking in the Benanti family traces back to the late 1800s. Giuseppe Benanti established the namesake winery in 1988, and after 25 years he passed the torch to his sons, Antonio and Salvino. The Benanti family played a pivotal role in sparking the modern wine movement on Mount Etna in the 1990s, helping to bring recognition to this now-celebrated region. The winery is known for its use of indigenous yeasts and a desire to respect the terroir and varietal characteristics of Etna, crafting wines that are elegant, balanced, and capable of aging. This is an estate whose own history is closely intertwined with the modern history of Etna, and they seek to show the best of this unique volcanic region.
