The Land
Nestled in the sun-soaked valleys of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado’s Western Slope, sourced and hand harvested from The Dallas Black vineyards in Palisade. Large commercial farming with lots of additions like fertilizers and pesticides doesn’t really exist in Colorado, so the existence of more natural wines here is possible. Here, at elevations ranging from 4,500 to 7,000 feet, the vines bask in long days of intense sunlight and cool, crisp nights. This significant diurnal temperature variation allows the grapes to develop a perfect balance of sugar and acidity, essential for crafting a Zinfandel with both depth and vibrancy. The region’s sandy loam soils, coupled with limited rainfall, ensure that the vines are stressed just enough to produce small, concentrated berries bursting with flavor.
The Wine
The 2022 Buckel Family Wines Zinfandel exemplifies minimal intervention winemaking and the exceptional qualities of Colorado terroir. With an alcohol content of 14.4%, this wine strikes a harmonious balance between power and finesse. Joe, a seasoned winemaker with years of experience in both Sonoma Valley and Colorado, brings a keen eye for detail and an unwavering dedication to quality. Shamai, has grown the brand and does eveything from host people in their tasting room to deliver wine to accounts all across the state. Together, they have created a Zinfandel that is not only a reflection of their expertise and philosophy but also a true expression of the unique Colorado terroir.
