The Land

Produced from estate vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, Bussola’s Amarone comes from hillside sites with excellent exposure and well-drained, limestone-rich marl soils. Elevations between 200–400 meters provide the diurnal variation necessary for preserving acidity, even in the warm, dry growing seasons typical of the region. The grapes undergo traditional appassimento, air-dried for several months in well-ventilated lofts—an essential step for Amarone that amplifies structure, depth, and aromatic intensity while retaining the region’s hallmark freshness.

The Wine

The 2019 is a blend of 35% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara. After roughly 4 months of drying, the grapes are fermented with native yeasts, then aged for 48 months across three formats: 55% in 500L twice-used tonneaux, 30% in 225L twice-used barriques, and 15% in large 25hL Slavonian oak casks. This extended, multi-vessel aging builds complexity and balance. The result is a powerful but focused Amarone: dense black cherry, dried plum, cocoa, and spice, with a savory, mineral backbone and firm tannins. At 16.5% alcohol, it’s bold yet controlled, showing length, structure, and real aging potential.

The People

Tommaso Bussola began his journey in 1977, working in his uncle’s cellar before gradually reshaping the estate’s direction. By 1983, driven by instinct and precision, he took full control of Amarone and Recioto production. The turning point came in 1992 with a new cellar and the introduction of barriques, marking the birth of the now-iconic “TB” line—wines defined by greater depth and finesse. His wife Daniela joined him in 1995, and by 2005, sons Paolo and Giuseppe became part of the family operation. Today, the Bussola estate is a leading voice in Valpolicella Classica, blending traditional techniques with modern sensibility, always anchored in respect for the land and its potential.

The Veneto wine region, located in northeastern Italy, is one of the most versatile and prolific wine-producing areas in the country. Stretching from the shores of Lake Garda in the west to the outskirts of Venice on the Adriatic coast, Veneto boasts a diverse range of microclimates and soils, which contribute to the production of a wide variety of wine styles. Famous for its elegant reds like Valpolicella and its iconic Amarone—a rich, powerful wine made using partially dried grapes—Veneto also produces the popular sparkling wine Prosecco, made in the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, and the crisp white Soave, known for its mineral and floral characteristics.

Veneto

Corvina is a key red wine grape predominantly grown in the Veneto region of Italy, celebrated for its pivotal role in producing the esteemed Amarone della Valpolicella. In the process of making Amarone, the grapes are traditionally dried in a method known as appassimento, which concentrates their sugars and flavors, resulting in a rich, full-bodied wine with a characteristically high alcohol content. This technique showcases Corvina’s ability to maintain acidity and freshness, even in such an intensely flavorful and structured wine. The grape’s adaptability and resilience make it indispensable in the Veneto region, especially for creating Amarone and its lighter counterpart, Valpolicella, offering a unique profile that is robust yet elegant.
