The Land

The Pinot Grigio most wine drinkers know comes from the warm Veneto plain: pale, neutral, engineered for early consumption. Terlano's version comes from steep, terraced slopes in the South Tyrol on sandy soils with calcareous clay and porphyric gravel at 270 to 350 meters above sea level. South and southwest exposure maximizes the region's 300 days of annual sunshine, while the lower atmospheric density at altitude intensifies direct solar radiation without overheating the vines. The volcanic porphyry drains well and stresses the vines productively. The Adige Valley's diurnal temperature swings, routinely 15 to 20 degrees Celsius between afternoon and midnight, maintain freshness through even the hottest summers. This is what Pinot Grigio looks like when it comes from a serious place.

The Wine

100% Pinot Grigio, hand-harvested and gently pressed. Natural sedimentation, then slow, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel. Five to seven months on fine lees in tank; no wood. 2024 was a hard year for Pinot Grigio specifically: spring frost following early bud break caused coulure during flowering, and Pinot Grigio was among the hardest-hit varieties in the region. Smaller crops concentrated what remained, and September's sharp cooling added aromatic focus. The 2024 shows lemon zest, white peach, mountain wildflowers, and a crushed-seashell mineral note, with a lean, taut palate and a saline finish that extends longer than expected.

The People

Cantina Terlano was founded in 1893 by 24 growers in what was then the South Tyrolean portion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The cooperative now includes 143 member families farming approximately 190 hectares, each typically working under a hectare and paid for grape quality rather than quantity. Cellar master Sebastian Stocker, who led the winery from 1955 to 1993, established the house's signature approach to extended lees aging and planted the idea that Alto Adige whites could age as long as serious Burgundy. Rudi Kofler has carried that philosophy into the present. Even the entry-level Pinot Grigio has more aging potential than most customers realize.

Food Pairing

A lean, mineral Pinot Grigio wants food with a little richness or salt. Grilled scampi with garlic and herb butter, spaghetti alle vongole, a simply dressed seafood platter, or fish tacos with avocado and lime crema. The saline finish is particularly good with briny ingredients: clams, oysters, cured fish. Good summer wine for an outdoor table; gone faster than planned.
