The Land

Domane Serrig Vogelsang Kabinett 2021 comes from the Vogelsang vineyard in Serrig, located in the Saar region of Germany. This historic site, now a monopole of Markus Molitor, is on a steep, south and southwest-facing slope of reddish slate, rising from 220 to 340 meters above sea level. Vogelsang was once part of the Prussian state domaine, built in 1904, and was considered a model estate until after World War II. Markus Molitor acquired the long-neglected domaine in 2016 and is in the process of restoring it and its 25 hectares of Riesling vines, of which only 5 hectares of old vines were deemed worth preserving, with the rest replanted with quality selections.

The Wine

This 2021 Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) bottling, while technically "feinherb," drinks with a striking dryness, a hallmark of this cooler vintage due to elevated acidity, and contains 10 g/l of residual sugar with 8 g/l acidity and 12% alcohol. Made from 100% Riesling, hand-picked and gently basket-pressed, it undergoes spontaneous fermentation in a combination of oak and stainless steel. Expect a spectacularly intense flinty and stony minerality on the nose, with notes of citron and pamplemousse pressé, blood orange, and orange blossom. The palate is brilliantly chiseled, incredibly tense yet gloriously silky in texture, with vertiginous acidity and a radiant, ultra-juicy attack that expands through the palate. Matchstick and campfire smoke notes intertwine with slate, citrus, and juicy elderflower. A monument to Riesling, with immense aging potential.

The Mosel, a stunning river valley in Germany, is a region synonymous with Riesling. The area's steep, slate slopes create a unique terroir that imparts a distinct minerality and high acidity to the wines. Mosel Rieslings range from bone dry to intensely sweet, showcasing the grape's versatility and the region's incredible potential for producing complex, age-worthy wines. The wines of the Mosel are known for their aromatic complexity and their incredibly graceful nature, and are a benchmark for all Riesling made throughout the world.

Germany - Mosel

Riesling is a truly noble grape, known for its incredibly high acidity and a flavor profile that can range from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Germany is its heartland, and it's responsible for some of the world's most age-worthy examples, but Riesling also thrives in Austria, where it usually is dry. In Alsace, it takes on a slightly richer texture, while in parts of Australia, like the Clare and Eden Valleys, it displays a uniquely powerful and lime-tinged aromatic profile. This is a grape that has no problem showcasing its origins, and it's a fantastic example of how one variety can show many different expressions, each with its own unique appeal.
