The Land

The Emilio Moro Ribera del Duero originates from vineyards located in the heart of Ribera del Duero, known as the "Golden Mile." The Duero River shapes the landscape, leaving its imprint on the soils. The estate's diverse soils consist of calcareous, clay, and stony components. The calcareous soils, with their distinctive white color, are rich in minerality, contributing elegance and complexity to the wines. The reddish clay soils are fertile and retain water well, providing structure and character. The stony soils have a high concentration of stones, offering a lighter, more supple quality and aiding in ripening. The Tempranillo vines, chosen for their perfect adaptation to this terroir, form the cornerstone of this expression.

The Wine

This 2021 bottling presents a garnet-red hue of good intensity. The nose is complex and expressive with an intriguing balance between fresh red fruit notes and riper black fruit, coffee, and spice notes like vanilla and clove from aging in a mix of French and American oak. The palate is balanced, with a medium structure and approachable, appealing tannins. The wine possesses an easy-drinking nature while maintaining its personality. It's a wine that seeks to show both the intensity and structure of Ribera del Duero, while maintaining a sense of elegance.

The People

Bodegas Emilio Moro's story spans over a century, tracing back to the family's roots in Pesquera de Duero. Emilio Moro's love for wine was passed down through generations, and the current family, supported by the fourth generation, manages the estate today. The winery's philosophy is driven by passion and a dedication to honoring the family's legacy, with a deep connection to the land. The label design for their Crianza Emilio Moro, a hand-drawn image representing the old winery, has become a symbol of the estate's history and traditions. The estate is known for the focus on the Tempranillo grape and the commitment to producing a Ribera del Duero that shows the authentic spirit of the place.

Castilla y León, a vast region in north-central Spain, is defined by a high-altitude plateau and a continental climate shaped by the Duero River. The region is known primarily for its red wines, with Ribera del Duero leading the charge with powerful Tempranillo-based wines, though Toro and Bierzo also contribute, alongside emerging white wines. On the southern border is the Sierra de Gredos, a separate region within the same broader area, known for its high-altitude vineyards and elegant Grenache (Garnacha) wines. The diverse soils, ranging from alluvial to sandy, clay, and gravel, combined with significant temperature swings between day and night, allow for the slow ripening of grapes, resulting in concentrated flavors and good acidity.

Spain - Castilla y Leon

Tempranillo, Spain's most celebrated red grape, takes its name from the Spanish word "temprano," meaning "early," a reference to the variety's tendency to ripen earlier than other Spanish grapes. This versatility allows it to thrive across a range of climates and soil types. Though primarily associated with Spain, where it forms the backbone of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and other prominent regions, Tempranillo also has a significant presence in Portugal. Here, it's known under various synonyms, including Tinta Roriz, Aragonez, and Tinto Fino, playing a crucial role in the production of both red and rosé wines. Its ability to produce wines with moderate acidity, balanced tannins, and complex flavors of red fruit, leather, and tobacco make it a favorite among winemakers and wine drinkers alike.
