The Land

The Il Paradiso di Manfredi Rosso di Montalcino 2021 comes from the family's estate located in Montalcino, Tuscany. This estate, family-run since the 1950s and fully converted to organic in 2006, is located high in the hills above Montalcino, with vineyards planted on rocky hillsides that face east and south. The soils, a mix of clay and galestro (a flaky schist), contribute to the structure and complexity of the wines, and this particular Rosso di Montalcino is a wonderful expression of the unique character of the area. This location also means that they get to harvest later than other areas of Montalcino and they often deal with a large diurnal shift between day and night time temperatures, which adds to the complex character of the wine.

The Wine

This 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is a pure expression of Sangiovese. It is produced in a natural style, with a focus on showing the fruit and terroir. Expect vibrant aromas of red cherry and raspberry, with notes of earth, spice, and a hint of balsamic. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh, with a fine tannic structure and a long, lingering finish that is both savory and satisfying. It is aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 12-18 months, allowing the wine to focus on the expression of the fruit and the terroir rather than a heavy influence from oak. The wine seeks to show a clear expression of place and quality, reflecting the estate's desire to produce wines that express this special area.

The People

Il Paradiso di Manfredi is a family-run estate with a long history of producing high-quality wines in Montalcino, going back to the 1950s. Their desire is to show the full potential of their unique terroir through organic farming practices and minimal intervention in the winery. The family is committed to preserving tradition while creating wines that have a singular expression of the Sangiovese grape, and they continue their historic approach with a modern understanding of their land and the region as a whole.

Tuscany, Italy is home to some of the world's most famous wines, including Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. The Sangiovese grape is the star of the region, creating bold and structured wines with notes of cherry and leather. In addition to the traditional wines, Tuscany is also known for its "Super Tuscans" - modern blends that incorporate non-traditional grapes and are often made along the coast.
