The Land:

Milsetentayseis based in the high-altitude vineyards of Fuentenebro, one of Ribera del Duero’s most distinctive terroirs. Sitting at 1,076 meters above sea level, this is one of the highest vineyard sites in the region, where extreme climatic conditions and mineral-rich soils create wines of remarkable structure and freshness. The area’s complex mix of red clay, quartz, and feldspar imparts a unique character, while the dramatic temperature shifts between day and night preserve acidity and enhance aromatic intensity. This is a landscape shaped by centuries of viticulture, now undergoing a careful restoration to honor its deep winemaking heritage.

The Wine:

Crafted primarily from 95% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) with 5% other native varieties, the 2020 vintage is a meticulous expression of site and tradition. Fermentation takes place in a combination of oak, clay, concrete, and stainless steel, followed by 18 months of aging in barriques and large oak foudres. The result is a wine that is both refined and powerful, balancing deep fruit intensity with a lifted, mineral-driven freshness. Layers of dark cherry, blackberry, and violet unfold alongside subtle notes of spice and graphite, carried by firm yet polished tannins. This is a wine built for both immediate pleasure and long-term aging.

The People:

Milsetentayseis is the latest project from Alma Carraovejas, dedicated to unlocking the potential of Fuentenebro’s ancestral vineyards. The name itself—1,076—pays tribute to the defining feature of this landscape: its extreme altitude. Combining old vines with thoughtful new plantings, the project is a long-term commitment to restoring a historic winemaking zone and expressing its true identity through wines of precision and authenticity. By embracing organic farming, native varieties, and innovative yet restrained winemaking, Milsetentayseis seeks to capture the individuality of each vineyard parcel and showcase one of Ribera del Duero’s most exciting emerging terroirs.

Castilla y León, a vast region in north-central Spain, is defined by a high-altitude plateau and a continental climate shaped by the Duero River. The region is known primarily for its red wines, with Ribera del Duero leading the charge with powerful Tempranillo-based wines, though Toro and Bierzo also contribute, alongside emerging white wines. On the southern border is the Sierra de Gredos, a separate region within the same broader area, known for its high-altitude vineyards and elegant Grenache (Garnacha) wines. The diverse soils, ranging from alluvial to sandy, clay, and gravel, combined with significant temperature swings between day and night, allow for the slow ripening of grapes, resulting in concentrated flavors and good acidity.

Spain - Castilla y Leon

Tempranillo, Spain's most celebrated red grape, takes its name from the Spanish word "temprano," meaning "early," a reference to the variety's tendency to ripen earlier than other Spanish grapes. This versatility allows it to thrive across a range of climates and soil types. Though primarily associated with Spain, where it forms the backbone of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and other prominent regions, Tempranillo also has a significant presence in Portugal. Here, it's known under various synonyms, including Tinta Roriz, Aragonez, and Tinto Fino, playing a crucial role in the production of both red and rosé wines. Its ability to produce wines with moderate acidity, balanced tannins, and complex flavors of red fruit, leather, and tobacco make it a favorite among winemakers and wine drinkers alike.
