The Land
In the northernmost reaches of the Loire Valley in France where the Loir tributary winds through the Sarthe, Pascal Janvier nurtures Pineau d’Aunis vines in the historic Coteaux du Loir appellation. The soils, a mix of clay, limestone, sand, and flint (silex), imbue the wines with a distinct mineral backbone and crisp precision. This cold, marginal climate pushes the limits of viticulture, challenging growers to produce wines of purity and elegance. The rare Pineau d’Aunis, nearly lost to history, thrives in Pascal’s careful hands, embodying the Loire’s heritage and resilience.

The Wine
This wine is a vibrant expression of 100% Pineau d’Aunis. In the glass, it shimmers a light ruby red, evocative of a youthful Pinot Noir. Aromas of wild strawberry, sour cherry, and rhubarb leap from the glass, underscored by a hallmark cracked black pepper spiciness. On the palate, the wine is fresh and bright, with a medium body and crisp red fruits and florals that amplifies its lively character. This wine has a delicate structure making it immensely drinkable, best served slightly chilled. Its balance of fruit, spice, and acidity make it a versatile companion to a variety of dishes, particularly those with bold flavors.

The People
Pascal Janvier’s path to winemaking was anything but typical. Trained as a butcher, he pivoted to viticulture at age thirty, committing himself to revive the almost-forgotten appellations of Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir. With the support of his wife Dominique, Pascal now farms 66 parcels totaling nine hectares, working tirelessly to champion the indigenous grapes and terroir of his region. His deliberate and focused approach results in wines that are both precise and soulful, honoring the traditions of a nearly extinct viticultural heritage.

Food Pairings

  1. Thanksgiving – Turkey and cranberry sauce: The wine’s tart red fruit flavors and peppery finish complement the cranberry side at the thanksgiving table, while its light body doesn’t overpower the delicate turkey.

  2. Spicy Korean Fried Chicken: The wine’s bright acidity and bright character combat the heat of the chicken while enhancing its savory-sweet glaze, making it a fun red pairing for spice-forward dishes.

  3. Moroccan-Spiced Lentil Stew: Pineau d’Aunis’ earthy and peppery notes harmonize beautifully with the warm spices and hearty texture of the lentils, creating a cozy, satisfying fall or winter pairing.
