The Land

From the northernmost edge of the Loire’s Touraine region, Jasnières is a tiny appellation perched on south-facing slopes above the Loir River. Soils here are classic tuffeau limestone over clay, with pockets of silex (flint) that bring precision and a distinct mineral edge. The cool continental climate, combined with long daylight hours and excellent drainage, allows Chenin Blanc to ripen slowly and retain its signature acidity. In 2023, a warm, balanced growing season yielded fruit with concentration and freshness, ideal for this often-overlooked terroir.

The Wine

100% Chenin Blanc, hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, with no malolactic conversion. Aged on lees for added texture, but without oak, preserving purity and definition. The 2023 is linear and mineral, with notes of green pear, white flowers, crushed stone, and citrus oil. It’s dry and tensile, driven by bright acidity and a saline finish. This is Chenin with edge—not broad or waxy, but focused and expressive, showing the limestone grip that defines great Jasnières.

The People

Pascal Janvier, a former butcher turned vigneron, has been quietly championing Jasnières and nearby Coteaux du Loir since the early 1990s. Farming just a handful of hectares, he works organically in practice, with minimal intervention in the cellar. Janvier’s wines are unapologetically old-school—no makeup, no shortcuts—just honest expressions of place. In a region where many still overlook the potential, Janvier continues to prove how serious, ageworthy, and terroir-driven Chenin Blanc can be from this corner of the Loire.

The Loire Valley, often referred to as the "Garden of France," is a revered wine region that stretches along the Loire River, producing an array of distinct wines, including the crisp, sea-breeze influenced Muscadet near the Atlantic coast, the versatile and expressive Chenin Blanc in regions like Vouvray and Anjou, the elegantly fragrant Cabernet Franc from Chinon and Bourgueil, and the minerally complex Sauvignon Blanc-based Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé from its eastern vineyards. This is a reflection of the valley's varied terroir and climate, which together foster the creation of wines that are celebrated for their finesse, diversity, and food-friendliness.

Loire Valley

Chenin Blanc, celebrated for its high acidity and versatility, finds its most iconic expressions in the Loire Valley of France and the sun-drenched vineyards of South Africa. In the Loire Valley, it's the backbone of an array of styles, from vibrant, dry whites to lusciously sweet wines, showcasing the grape's remarkable ability to reflect terroir and respond to winemaking techniques. Meanwhile, South Africa has embraced Chenin Blanc, locally known as Steen, producing wines that range from fresh and fruity to complex and age-worthy, further cementing the grape's global appeal and adaptability.
