The Land
Hailing from the rugged, wind-swept vineyards of Fort Ross-Seaview on the westerly Sonoma Coast, the 2022 'Lady Marjorie' Chardonnay is grown in rocky, ancient soils. These coastal sites, perched on steep cliffs overlooking the Pacific, experience cool, fog-laden mornings and breezy afternoons, creating ideal conditions for slow-ripening Chardonnay. The extreme terroir, with its thin, rocky soils and dramatic temperature swings, imparts a distinct minerality and vibrancy to the wine, capturing the wild beauty and precision of the Sonoma Coast.

The Wine
A cuvée of the best barrels in the cellar, the inaugural release of 'Lady Marjorie' is a Chardonnay of finesse, elegance, and verve, with an ABV of 12.5%. The nose opens with crushed wet gravel, ripe white peach, and crunchy nectarine, unfolding into delicate layers of honeysuckle, apricot, and citrus pith. On the palate, the crushed stone character persists, accompanied by flavors of summer-ripe stone fruits and white flowers, transporting you to the cool coastal vineyards where the vines grow. Natively barrel fermented and bottled without fining or filtration, this Chardonnay offers a subtle coastal salinity and bright acidity, leading to a long, seamless finish that echoes the pure essence of the Sonoma Coast’s rugged landscape.

The People
Dedicated to their grandmother, Marjorie Mondavi, 'Lady Marjorie' reflects the inspiration and legacy of a woman whose hard work, dedication, and steadfast determination shaped the path of the Mondavi family. Carlo and Dante Mondavi honor her spirit with this Chardonnay, crafting it with the same care and respect that guided her life. Sourced from two special sites along the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, this wine embodies the Mondavi brothers’ philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard to shine.

Sonoma County, located west of Napa Valley and stretching to the Pacific Ocean, is a large and diverse wine region in California. With a history of winemaking dating back to the 19th century, Sonoma's varied terroir allows it to grow grapes in multiple places throughout the region. Bordered by the Mayacamas Mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, the county encompasses a range of climates and soils. The Russian River Valley, known for its cool climate influenced by fog, is acclaimed for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Alexander Valley, further inland and warmer, excels with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sonoma Coast, a region directly influenced by the Pacific's cool breezes and fog, is gaining recognition for elegant, cool-climate wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This diverse landscape provides the fruit for an array of styles.

California - Sonoma County

Chardonnay, one of the world's most versatile and beloved white grape varieties, showcases a remarkable spectrum of styles, from the lean, mineral-driven expressions of Chablis in France to the rich, buttery, and oak-aged versions from California's Napa Valley. Its adaptability extends to cooler climates such as Burgundy, where it achieves elegance and complexity, and to regions like Australia's Yarra Valley, known for producing vibrant and fruit-forward renditions. This grape's ability to reflect its terroir, coupled with winemaking techniques, results in a wide array of profiles, including unoaked, crisp varieties with apple and citrus notes, to full-bodied wines with tropical fruit flavors and creamy textures.
