The Land:

Three Valleys represents Ridge’s understanding of Sonoma County’s most exceptional Zinfandel vineyards, sourcing fruit from across the region’s top appellations, including Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley. These distinct microclimates and alluvial soils create a layered, expressive wine that reflects the best of Sonoma’s diverse terroir. Warm, sun-drenched days allow for full ripeness, while cool evening breezes from the Pacific preserve fresh acidity and aromatic complexity. The result is a wine that captures the richness, balance, and structure that define great Sonoma Zinfandel.

The Wine:

A classic field blend, the 2022 Three Valleys is composed of 65% Zinfandel, 16% Carignane, 14% Petite Sirah, and 5% Mataro (Mourvèdre). Native yeast fermentation and natural malolactic conversion preserve the wine’s purity, while 11 months of aging in air-dried American oak (7% new) lend subtle spice and depth. Expect a vibrant, fruit-forward profile with dark raspberry, blackberry, and bramble, layered with anise, espresso, and baking spice. The palate is structured yet supple, finishing with refined tannins and a lift of refreshing acidity.

The People:

Since 1962, Ridge Vineyards has been a pioneer of single-vineyard winemaking in California, seeking out rare sites where climate, soil, and variety converge to produce wines of distinction. Their philosophy is “pre-industrial” winemaking, embracing traditional methods while rejecting excessive additives and manipulation. Ridge is one of the few wineries to transparently list all ingredients on their labels, demonstrating their commitment to minimal intervention and terroir-driven expression. Three Valleys is the only blend in their lineup, a masterful composition that showcases Sonoma’s best Zinfandel-growing sites while remaining true to Ridge’s uncompromising standards of quality and authenticity.

Sonoma County, located west of Napa Valley and stretching to the Pacific Ocean, is a large and diverse wine region in California. With a history of winemaking dating back to the 19th century, Sonoma's varied terroir allows it to grow grapes in multiple places throughout the region. Bordered by the Mayacamas Mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, the county encompasses a range of climates and soils. The Russian River Valley, known for its cool climate influenced by fog, is acclaimed for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Alexander Valley, further inland and warmer, excels with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sonoma Coast, a region directly influenced by the Pacific's cool breezes and fog, is gaining recognition for elegant, cool-climate wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This diverse landscape provides the fruit for an array of styles.

California - Sonoma County

Zinfandel, a red grape variety with a somewhat mysterious past, is most closely associated with California, where it has become a flagship grape. Genetically equivalent to Italy's Primitivo and Croatia's Crljenak Kaštelanski (and Tribidrag), Zinfandel's journey to California likely occurred in the mid-19th century. The grape thrives in California's warm climate, producing wines that range from sweet rosés (often labeled "White Zinfandel") to bold, full-bodied reds with flavors of blackberry, raspberry, and peach yogurt, often accompanied by higher alcohol levels. Zinfandel's ability to reflect its terroir, along with its versatility in winemaking, has made it a beloved and iconic grape in the American wine landscape.
