The Land

Rivetto sits on the Lirano hill in Sinio, right where the communes of Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, and Sinio meet, at around 400 meters. The detail that matters: the soils here are the same calcareous clay and marl as Serralunga d'Alba, the commune that produces some of the most structured Barolo of all. That is why this Langhe Nebbiolo drinks like a younger, more approachable cousin of Barolo rather than a simple everyday red. The grape is the same, the ground is nearly the same, and only the appellation and the aging rules differ. Cool altitude and limestone-rich marl give the wine its perfume and its firm, savory backbone.

The Wine

100% Nebbiolo, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in oak casks in a style meant to keep the fruit fresh and the wine approachable while holding onto real structure. Expect the classic Nebbiolo signature: rose petal, red cherry, dried herbs, a little tar and orange peel, with fine, gently gripping tannins and a bright, savory finish. This has the transparency and lift you want from the grape, without the years of cellaring a Barolo demands. The 2021 vintage was excellent and classic across Piedmont, giving balanced, ageworthy Nebbiolo. Give it an hour in a decanter and it opens beautifully.

The People

Rivetto has farmed the Langhe since Enrico Rivetto's great-grandfather founded the estate in 1902, and Enrico, the fourth generation, has taken it somewhere new. The estate fully converted to organic farming in 2009, and in 2016 it became the first winery in the entire Barolo and Barbaresco zone to earn Demeter biodynamic certification. That commitment to living soil, more microorganisms and healthier vines, is central to how these wines taste. Rivetto is one of the most quietly serious and forward-thinking addresses in the Langhe.

Food Pairing

Nebbiolo loves savory, umami-rich food. Pour it with a mushroom risotto, with tajarin or tagliatelle in a meat ragù, with roast pork or braised beef, or with a plate of aged Piedmontese cheeses. Its perfume and acidity also make it a natural with anything featuring truffle. Serve it at cool room temperature, decanted if young. The kind of Nebbiolo that gives you the Barolo experience on a weeknight.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Italy - Piedmont

Nebbiolo, a prestigious grape from Italy's Piedmont region, is celebrated for its profound truffle and rose aromas, complex flavors, and ability to age gracefully thanks to strong acidity and tannins, producing the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines.
