Sella & Mosca Terre Rare Carignano Del Sulcis Riserva 2021

The Land:

Sourced from the sun-drenched vineyards of Sulcis in southern Sardinia, this Carignano thrives in sandy, well-drained soils shaped by the island’s intense sunlight and cooling Mediterranean breezes. The vines, trained in a spurred cordon system at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare, produce low yields of concentrated fruit. This coastal terroir, stretching from Capo Teulada to the Iglesiente mountain range, imparts a distinctive minerality and structure to the wine.

The Wine:

Made from 100% Carignano, the grapes are destemmed and fermented at controlled temperatures, followed by malolactic fermentation for added depth. Aged for 12 months in second-use French barriques and an additional six months in bottle, the wine balances power and finesse. Deep ruby red with youthful purple highlights, it offers layered aromas of pomegranate, currants, wild blackberries, and aromatic herbs, evolving into softer notes of fig, licorice, and sweet spice. On the palate, it is warm and generous, with polished tannins, vibrant acidity (5.5 g/L), and a lingering finish that recalls ripe fruit and Mediterranean spices. At 13.5% ABV, it is structured yet approachable.
