The Land

The Palmberg vineyard is one of the Mosel’s hidden treasures—steep, unforgiving, and breathtakingly beautiful. Here, vines cling to precipitous slopes of blue and gray slate, absorbing the warmth of the sun by day and releasing it slowly through the cool river nights. This dramatic terrain, combined with the Mosel’s ever-shifting weather patterns, demands both patience and precision. The 2023 vintage saw a season of measured ripening and well-timed rains, yielding Rieslings of remarkable energy and clarity. The Palmberg’s singular terroir expresses itself in a striking mineral backbone, a wine that hums with the tension between fruit, acidity, and slate-driven depth.

The Wine

The Spätlese Trocken from Palmberg is a Riesling of intensity and finesse, balancing late-harvest concentration with razor-sharp precision. The nose bursts with white peach, lime zest, and wet stone, laced with wild herbs and a whisper of sea breeze. On the palate, vibrant acidity cuts through layers of ripe citrus, green apple, and a touch of honeyed richness, revealing a crystalline structure beneath. The finish is long, electric, and deeply mineral, showcasing both the vineyard’s raw power and Ulli Stein’s masterful restraint.

The People

Ulli Stein is an iconoclast, a true maverick in the Mosel. For decades, he has championed old vines and extreme vineyards that many had abandoned, refusing to follow trends or compromise his vision. His wines, like the man himself, are fearless—driven by terroir, unpolished yet precise, built to challenge and inspire. Farming organically and working exclusively by hand, Stein preserves the wild energy of his vineyards, crafting Rieslings that feel alive. The Palmberg Spätlese Trocken is a reflection of this philosophy: a wine of tension, depth, and authenticity.

The Mosel, a stunning river valley in Germany, is a region synonymous with Riesling. The area's steep, slate slopes create a unique terroir that imparts a distinct minerality and high acidity to the wines. Mosel Rieslings range from bone dry to intensely sweet, showcasing the grape's versatility and the region's incredible potential for producing complex, age-worthy wines. The wines of the Mosel are known for their aromatic complexity and their incredibly graceful nature, and are a benchmark for all Riesling made throughout the world.

Germany - Mosel

Riesling is a truly noble grape, known for its incredibly high acidity and a flavor profile that can range from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Germany is its heartland, and it's responsible for some of the world's most age-worthy examples, but Riesling also thrives in Austria, where it usually is dry. In Alsace, it takes on a slightly richer texture, while in parts of Australia, like the Clare and Eden Valleys, it displays a uniquely powerful and lime-tinged aromatic profile. This is a grape that has no problem showcasing its origins, and it's a fantastic example of how one variety can show many different expressions, each with its own unique appeal.
