- Land: The Benanti Serra Della Contessa 'Particella No. 587' Etna Rosso Riserva 2017 is from the southeastern slope of Mount Etna, in Contrada Monte Serra, Viagrande, Sicily. The vineyard boasts sandy, volcanic soil, rich in minerals with a slightly acidic pH. Its steep southeast exposure and dense planting of ancient bush vines shape the wine's distinctive profile. The 2017 vintage faced varied weather, including a cold winter, spring frost, a dry June, a very hot July, and a dry August with some rain, culminating in a complex harvest.
- Wine: Made primarily from Nerello Mascalese with some Nerello Cappuccio, this Etna Rosso Riserva showcases the terroir's minerality and the grapes' tannic nature. The winemaking process involves fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel, extended maceration, aging in large French oak barrels for at least 15 months, followed by more aging in stainless steel and bottles. It presents a ruby red color with garnet hints, and aromas of wild berries, spices, and noble wood, leading to a full-bodied, harmonious, mineral-rich, and persistent palate.
- People: Winemaking in the Benanti family dates back to the late 1800s, with Giuseppe Benanti founding the winery in 1988 to continue this legacy. Today it is run by his two sons, Salvino and Antonio. Located on the volcanic soils of Mount Etna, the winery emphasizes sustainable practices and the use of indigenous yeasts, focusing on capturing the unique character of its environment.
