The Vino di Anna "Jeudi 15" Rosso 2020 is a vibrant expression of the Etna terroir, showcasing the unique characteristics of organically farmed Nerello Mascalese grapes from ancient bush vine vineyards in the MonteLaguardia contrada. This wine captures the essence of its volcanic origins with a mineral-driven finish and a tapestry of red fruit and spice.

  • Vineyard Location: Nestled on the northern slopes of Mt. Etna, between Passopisciaro and Randazzo, the vineyards sit at altitudes of 800 to 840 meters, benefiting from the cool, elevated conditions ideal for preserving the grapes' acidity and aromatic profile.

  • Grape Composition: Primarily Nerello Mascalese, with touches of Nerello Cappuccio and Alicante, reflecting the traditional vineyard plantings of the region. The age of the vines, 80-90 years, contributes to the wine's complexity and depth.

  • Vinification: A blend of 70% de-stemmed grapes and 30% whole bunches were fermented in an open wooden fermenter by indigenous yeasts, with manual punch-downs. Post-fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and aging on fine lees in used large oak casks, enhancing its texture and flavor integration without overt oak influence.

  • Tasting Notes: The wine presents a crimson red hue, with aromas of red cherries, wild raspberries, and white flowers. The palate is medium-bodied, juicy, and laden with red fruits and a subtle spiciness, framed by fine, austere tannins. The volcanic soil imparts a distinctive mineral finish, elongating the wine's complexity.

  • Pairing Suggestions: Its juicy acidity and nuanced tannic structure make it an excellent partner to a wide range of dishes, from grilled meats to pasta with rich tomato-based sauces, complementing the flavors with its bright fruit and spicy undertones

The Mount Etna wine region, dramatically draped across three sides of the active Etna volcano in Sicily, is distinguished by its striking variation in elevation and the rich mosaic of volcanic soils. These unique conditions foster the cultivation of vines at altitudes ranging from a few hundred meters above sea level to over 1,000 meters, creating microclimates that yield wines of profound complexity and minerality. The region's wines, most notably those made from the indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Carricante grape varieties, are celebrated for their ability to capture the essence of Etna's fiery terroir in each bottle.

Mount Etna

Named for its pale color and hometown of Mascali, Nerello Mascalese is a rising star in the wine world. Indigenous to Mount Etna, it was overlooked for decades until recently the world has taken notice of the elegant yet powerfully minerally wines produced on the volcanic slopes. Think halfway between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo.
