The Land
The Vietti Derthona Colli Tortonesi Timorasso 2022 is a white wine sourced from vineyards in the Colli Tortonesi DOC of Piedmont, located roughly an hour east of Barolo and south of Milan. These hills, planted with Timorasso, benefit from a southeastern-southwestern exposure and soils rich in limestone and clay. Derthona, the ancient Latin name for the town of Tortona, is increasingly found on labels as producers seek to highlight the distinct character of this region and establish it as a hallmark for this wine.
The Wine
This 100% Timorasso is crafted to showcase the potential of the variety in the Colli Tortonesi region. Fermentation lasts approximately four weeks, utilizing a combination of ceramic vessels, oak casks, and stainless steel tanks, and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. Expect a wine that is clear and intense yellow in color, with aromas of pear, peach, and floral nuances, complemented by the signature honey notes of Timorasso. The palate is dry, warm, and well-balanced, exhibiting a rich, oily texture with vibrant acidity reminiscent of Chenin Blanc or Chablis.
The People
Vietti, located in the heart of the Langhe hills in Castiglione Falletto, is a winery with a history dating back to the late 1800s. Founded by Carlo Vietti, the estate's turning point came with Alfredo Currado in the mid-20th century, whose innovations helped revolutionize Piedmont winemaking. For many years, Alfredo's son Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena Penna carried on his legacy, contributing to Vietti's status as one of Italy's finest wine labels. While Luca Currado and Elena Penna resigned from Vietti in January 2023, the winery continues its dedication to quality under the ownership of the Krause family. The existing winemaking team and administrative staff remain in place, with Franco Denari now serving as director and Beppe Caviola continuing as consulting oenologist, ensuring Vietti's ongoing commitment to excellence and its heritage of sustainable agriculture.
