The Land
Luigi Giordano Barbaresco "Cavanna" is from the renowned Cavanna cru within the Barbaresco DOCG in Piedmont, Italy. The Cavanna subzone, situated closest to the center of the village of Barbaresco, has a unique terroir characterized by a southwestern exposure and soils composed of laminated Sant'Agata Fossili marls mixed with silt. The vineyard, divided into three parcels, enjoys a privileged position, ending at the sheer dropoff of the cliffs along the Tanaro River, whose currents contribute to a unique microclimate. These vineyards, planted with Nebbiolo Lampia, are situated at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level and have a southern exposure.

The Wine
This Barbaresco "Cavanna" 2021 is 100% Nebbiolo Lampia grapes sourced from the Cavanna cru. Following a 35-40-day maceration period with controlled temperature fermentation in cement tanks, the wine underwent a submerged cap phase for an additional 20 days to enhance extraction. Subsequently, the wine aged for at least 30 months in large, 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels, averaging 10 years old. The 2021 vintage, characterized by ideal ripening conditions, showcases the elegant structure and complex aromatics typical of Barbaresco. The wine displays a deep ruby color and an alluring nose dominated by red fruit aromas, such as cherry and raspberry, interwoven with notes of rose, tar, and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with firm yet refined tannins and a vibrant acidity. Flavors of red fruit are complemented by notes of earth, spice, and a touch of minerality.

The People
Luigi Giordano, a family-run winery, has a long and storied history in the Barbaresco region. Founded by Giovanni Giordano in the 1930s during a period of significant upheaval in the Italian wine industry, the winery embodies a spirit of resilience and innovation. After a period of selling grapes, Giovanni's son, Luigi, made the bold decision to establish his own winemaking label in 1958, a pioneering move at a time when the Barbaresco DOCG was still in its early stages of development. Today, the winery remains a family affair, with Luigi's daughter Laura and grandson Matteo carrying on the family legacy. Together, they continue to produce timeless wines from prestigious crus like Asili and Montestefano, while also showcasing the unique character of individual vineyards through single-cru bottlings like this Barbaresco "Cavanna."
