The Land

Hobo started Camp in 2011 to show off Sonoma County. The 2023 Cabernet carries a North Coast label instead, because some of its fruit now comes from Mendocino. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Lolonis Vineyard in Redwood Valley, Martorana Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, and the Shamwary and Prior vineyards in Sonoma Valley. The Merlot comes from Gibson Vineyard in Hopland and Morrison Vineyard in Sonoma Valley. Redwood Valley tops 90°F on about 64 days a year, and its nights cool sharply, which builds dark fruit while keeping the acidity firm. Dry Creek brings fog-cooled structure, and Sonoma Valley adds a middle register. Blending several counties evens out the year in a way no single site can.

The Wine

Camp North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is Cabernet with a portion of Merlot, all from vineyards certified organic by CCOF. Primary and malolactic fermentations ran on native yeast and native bacteria, without commercial fermentation aids or additives. Every lot fermented in stainless steel with one or two punch-downs or pump-overs a day, and the wine then aged in neutral French oak. With no new oak, the fruit and tannin show directly. Expect blackberry, black plum, cocoa, and dried sage, with medium-firm tannin and a clean, slightly dusty finish. 2023 was a cool, long season in Northern California with a late harvest, and that slow ripening keeps Cabernet from the North Coast fresh rather than jammy.

The People

Hobo makes its wine in an unmarked warehouse by the railroad tracks in south Santa Rosa's Roseland neighborhood, where the company has worked since 2013. It is an urban winery with no tasting-room view. Kenny Likitprakong's first job after college was with an organic producer, and for roughly 20 years he farmed without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides before seeking certification. He applied to CCOF in 2020, and the certification took effect in January 2021. He was after transparency more than a marketing badge. Today 100% of the vineyards Hobo farms itself are organic, along with 88% of the vineyards it buys from. Camp is where that work reaches the widest audience.

Food Pairing

This is a red for real dinners on real budgets. Make smash burgers with American cheese and griddled onions. The tannin cuts the fat, and the dark fruit stands up to the char. Bake ziti with Italian sausage, ricotta, and plenty of tomato, which the wine's acidity handles easily. Grill carne asada and spoon chimichurri over it, letting the dried-sage side of the wine meet the herbs. It is the kind of house red worth buying by the case: good enough to notice, priced so you never have to save it.

This region includes wines labeled "North Coast", which are often blends including Sonoma and Napa counties. This expansive area encompasses established regions like Mendocino and Lake Counties, as well as newer vineyard sites pushing towards the Oregon border. Mendocino County is known for its varied climates, from the Anderson Valley's cool, fog-influenced areas ideal for Pinot Noir and sparkling wine, to warmer inland spots. Lake County, further inland, offers volcanic soils and a warmer climate suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon and other varieties. Beyond these, even more northerly locations are being explored for their unique terroir, contributing to the evolving identity of California's northern wine production.

California - North Coast & Far North

Cabernet Sauvignon, originally hailing from Bordeaux, France, has triumphantly spread to become a cornerstone of vineyards worldwide, achieving particular renown in Napa Valley. This versatile grape variety adapts to a broad spectrum of climates, producing full-bodied wines that are rich in black cherry and blackcurrant flavors, with layered complexities of oak and spice. The grape's success in regions like Napa Valley is a testament to its global adaptability, where it benefits from the optimal blend of warm days and cool nights, coupled with diverse soil types, to express a unique balance of power and elegance that pays homage to its Bordeaux origins.
