The Land

Albert Boxler built its reputation on granite, the steep Sommerberg and Brand grands crus above Niedermorschwihr and Turckheim. Florimont is the opposite. This 21-hectare grand cru, shared by Ingersheim and Katzenthal just west of Colmar, sits at 250 to 280 meters on a complex mix of marl and limestone strewn with fallen limestone rock. The Vosges shelter it from western wind and rain, leaving it drier and warmer than its latitude suggests. The name means "hill of flowers," a translation of the older German Blumberg, and it joined the grand cru list in 1992. Boxler's plot faces south on pebbly limestone-marl, soil that gives Pinot Gris from Alsace breadth and a firm, chalky spine rather than granite's smoky snap.

The Wine

Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Grand Cru Florimont 2021 is 100% Pinot Gris, made by the domaine's house method: hand-harvested fruit, juice cold-settled after pressing, fermentation that starts on its own, aging in old foudres in the cellar beneath the family home, and no fining. The importer's sheet lists 10 g/l of residual sugar, which reads close to dry against the acidity. Expect lime marmalade, ripe peach, almond, and wet stone, an intense, structured middle, and a long, clean finish. 2021 was a hard year in Alsace: a very wet July brought heavy mildew pressure, powdery mildew returned in August, and some growers lost 50 to 80 percent of their crop. Patient pickers made grand cru Alsace white wine with high acid and long aging potential.

The People

Jean Boxler took over from his father, Jean-Marc, in 1996, and over three decades he has made this small Niedermorschwihr domaine a reference point for dry, site-driven Alsace. The estate is centered on the Sommerberg, a granite grand cru whose slope ends at the domaine's driveway, with further holdings in the Brand. Florimont is a recent addition, and it gives Jean a limestone counterpoint to everything else he makes. The vineyards are farmed organically, and the cellar work is old-school and unhurried: no fining, no forcing fermentations, and big, well-seasoned casks that shape texture without adding wood flavor. Kermit Lynch has imported the wines for years, and they remain some of the most sought-after bottles from the region.

Food Pairing

Kermit Lynch's own suggestion is spicy food, and it is the right call. Sichuan twice-cooked pork belly with leeks and chili bean paste works because the touch of sweetness tames the heat while the acidity cuts the fat. Roast guinea hen with chanterelles and a splash of cream matches the wine's breadth and almond side. Seared scallops with brown butter and orange zest echo the marmalade fruit, and warm Comté gougères bring out the stony finish. Open it the night you finally cook the dish you never know what to drink with.

The Alsace wine region is located in northeastern France and is known for producing aromatic white wines. The region benefits from a cool climate with a combination of continental and maritime influences, allowing for the cultivation of grape varieties like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. Pinot Noir has also been making major strides in this border region.
