The Land

Chardonnay is not a newcomer in Piedmont. The Piemonte DOC has covered the grape since 1994, and the zone it draws from takes in a wide sweep of the region's hill country: the Langhe and Roero around Alba, the Langa Monregalese, and the Asti and Monferrato hills toward Canelli and Nizza Monferrato. This is the broad regional appellation, so a Piemonte Chardonnay can blend fruit from several of these areas rather than a single site. The hills share calcareous marl and sandy soils, warm days and cool nights in the river valleys, a climate that ripens Chardonnay fully while keeping its acidity intact. The result is a Piedmont white wine built for freshness rather than weight.

The Wine

Franco Serra Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay, made in a dry, crisp style at a modest 12% alcohol in past releases. Expect an unoaked style built on fruit and acidity. In past vintages it has shown a rich straw color, white flowers and apple, and a dry, clean finish. The Franco Serra Chardonnay 2025 arrives within about a year of harvest, so expect it at its freshest, with crisp apple and blossom up front and the acidity in charge.

The People

Franco Serra is a value label that covers most of Piedmont's major appellations, with 22 wines across the range. Alongside this Chardonnay it bottles Barolo, Barolo Riserva, Barbaresco, Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d'Alba and d'Asti, Dolcetto d'Alba, Roero Arneis and Gavi, plus a Piemonte Pinot Noir. The point of the label is access: regional wines at everyday prices that let you drink across Piedmont without paying for single-vineyard bottlings. We stock it because it does that job honestly, a clean, correct varietal Chardonnay at a price that makes sense for a weeknight.

Food Pairing

Keep the food as straightforward as the wine. Chicken Milanese with an arugula and lemon salad works because the acidity cuts the breading. A creamy corn chowder with bacon plays the wine's apple against the sweetness of the corn. Egg salad on toasted rye with chives is a better match than it sounds, since the crisp finish lifts the richness of the yolk, and pan-fried sole with butter and parsley suits its light body. This is the bottle to keep in the fridge door for a Tuesday.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Italy - Piedmont

Chardonnay, one of the world's most versatile and beloved white grape varieties, showcases a remarkable spectrum of styles, from the lean, mineral-driven expressions of Chablis in France to the rich, buttery, and oak-aged versions from California's Napa Valley. Its adaptability extends to cooler climates such as Burgundy, where it achieves elegance and complexity, and to regions like Australia's Yarra Valley, known for producing vibrant and fruit-forward renditions. This grape's ability to reflect its terroir, coupled with winemaking techniques, results in a wide array of profiles, including unoaked, crisp varieties with apple and citrus notes, to full-bodied wines with tropical fruit flavors and creamy textures.
