The Land

The Domaine Yvon Clerget Volnay Clos du Verseuil Monopole 2022 is a singular expression of Volnay, sourced entirely from the family's exclusive 0.68-hectare Clos du Verseuil vineyard. This monopole, a walled vineyard wholly owned by the Domaine, was purchased in 1936 and sits adjacent to the highly regarded Taillepieds vineyard. The vineyard's north-south vine row orientation mirrors those of other prestigious sites like Clos de Tart, Clos des Lambrays, La Tâche, La Grand Rue, La Romanée, and Cros Parantoux. This unique microclimate and the careful viticulture contribute to the elegance and finesse for which Volnay is known, with this particular site offering a remarkable purity of expression.

The Wine

The Domaine Yvon Clerget Volnay Clos du Verseuil Monopole 2022 presents a captivating profile of Volnay character, marking the triumphant return of this monopole after six years (from 2009-2014) of grapes being sold to Henri Boillot. The nose is complex and fragrant, with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, intertwined with subtle notes of rose petal, spice, and a hint of forest floor. On the palate, the wine exhibits a refined structure, with silky tannins and a bright, precise acidity. Its flavors of red fruit and earth are balanced by a delicate minerality. The wine is aged in oak barrels, with 30% new oak. All this leads to a long, graceful finish that showcases the elegance and complexity inherent to the Clos du Verseuil. This is a wine of notable charm and sophistication.

The People

Domaine Yvon Clerget's history stretches back to 1268 when the Clerget family settled in Volnay. The domaine's modern history began in 1936, with the acquisition of the Clos du Verseuil 1er Cru in Volnay. In 1983, Yvon Clerget took over winemaking, and when he was ready to retire in 2009, his son Thibaud was still too young. Yvon sold grapes to Henri Boillot until Thibaud completed his studies and an internship at Domaine Hudelot-Noellat. Thibaud took the lead of his family domaine in 2015, at the age of 24. The domaine's focus remains on sustainable viticulture with minimal intervention in the cellar, ensuring that the purity of the fruit and unique qualities of the terroir are expressed in each wine.
