Nestled in the Premier Cru village of Vrigny, on the northern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, the Lelarge-Pugeot estate sits in one of Champagne’s most storied terroirs. This specific parcel, "La Côte des Glaises," derives its name from its distinctive clay-rich (glaise) soils, layered with chalk, limestone, and loam, a geological tapestry that imparts profound minerality and elegance to the wine. North-facing slopes offer a gentle reprieve from the intensifying heat of a warming climate, creating an ideal environment for Chardonnay with stunning balance and finesse. At an elevation of 400 feet, these vineyards encapsulate a perfect harmony of natural coolness and ripening potential.
The Wine
A Chardonnay of striking purity and texture, La Côte des Glaises challenges expectations with its quiet intensity. This experimental zero-zero cuvée is crafted without sulfur or intervention, letting the terroir speak unimpeded. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and macerated in new barrels from Tonnellerie de Champagne, the wine offers a seamless interplay of pristine fruit and mysterious depth. Aged for 12 months in oak, it exhibits a textural richness, with notes of yellow orchard fruits, fresh cream, and a whisper of almond, underscored by a chalky salinity. With less than 1,000 bottles produced, this is a rare gem—a still wine with the soul of Champagne.
The People
Lelarge-Pugeot is a deeply rooted, eighth-generation family domaine, helmed by Dominique Lelarge and Dominique Pugeot, alongside their children. Their daughter Clémence, an ambassador for biodynamic farming, continues the family’s legacy with a forward-thinking yet tradition-bound ethos. Certified organic in 2014 and biodynamic in 2017, the family approaches wine growing with an emphasis on sustainability. Their wines are not merely expressions of Champagne but reflections of their collective spirit—bright, lively, and undeniably captivating. With experimental cuvées like La Côte des Glaises, the family dares to push the boundaries of what Champagne can be, crafting wines that transcend fizz to celebrate the essence of the land.
