The Land
Part of Haut-Bages Libéral's vineyard grows right up against the property line of Château Latour. The estate's 30 hectares sit in three separate blocks in southern Pauillac, with neighbors that also include Pichon Baron and Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Half the vineyard lies around the château on gravel over clay and limestone, and half on the deep, free-draining gravels of the Bages plateau. That split is the signature. The gravel pushes Cabernet Sauvignon to full ripeness, while the limestone underneath holds water and keeps the wine fresh through a warm summer. The estate calls the result a Pauillac "in lace," which is a fair description of a classified growth that trades the commune's usual heft for line and lift. Hedges and fruit, nut and timber trees now run between the rows, part of an agroforestry program that has planted around 700 trees across the estate.
The Wine
The 2023 is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, picked from September 12 to 30 at 53 hectoliters per hectare. Spring rain was moderate and useful, summer ran hot and dry, and late-August warmth finished the ripening before September showers refreshed the last Cabernet on the vine. Fermentation is by parcel with 24 days of maceration at 20 to 24°C. There are no pump-overs; the cap is kept wet with bursts of neutral gas, and pressing is vertical, both choices aimed at fine tannin rather than extraction. Aging lasted 16 months: 40% in new barrels, 40% in once-used barrels and 20% in egg-shaped concrete and amphorae, which keeps oak in the background. Alcohol is 13.5%. Expect cassis, crushed graphite and cedar, a mid-palate of black cherry, and a cool, slightly chalky finish from that limestone.
The People
The Libéral family gave the estate its name in the early 18th century, and it was classified as a fifth growth in 1855. Later owners, first the Cruse family and then the Merlauts, spent most of their attention on their other châteaux, Pontet-Canet and Chasse-Spleen respectively. That changed in 2000, when Claire Villars-Lurton, the third generation of the Merlaut family, took over. She began a biodynamic approach in 2007, overhauled the vinification to protect fruit and refine tannin, and today runs the estate alongside Château Durfort-Vivens as part of G&C Lurton Estates with her husband Gonzague Lurton. Haut-Bages Libéral is certified organic (AB) and biodynamic (Demeter), and it has become one of the Médoc's clearest test cases for regenerative farming and agroforestry at the classified-growth level.
Food Pairing
Start with steak frites, a seared hanger or bavette finished with shallot butter; the Cabernet tannin grips the char and the acid cuts the butter. Roast pork loin rubbed with fennel seed and garlic works for the same reason, with the cedar in the wine picking up the spice. For a meatless night, try grilled portobellos with thyme, balsamic and a shaving of Gruyère, where the earthiness meets the graphite side of the wine. And a proper burger with aged cheddar is not beneath this Pauillac red wine at all. This is the classified-growth Bordeaux you can open on a Thursday without needing a reason.
