The Land
Grasevina is the same grape as Welschriesling, and it is not related to Riesling at all — the name is a centuries-old case of mistaken identity that still trips people up. It is Croatia's most-planted white variety, accounting for more than a quarter of the country's vineyard area, and its heartland is Slavonia. Erdut sits at the far eastern edge, on the slopes of Dalj mount where the Danube loops around the village and effectively turns it into a peninsula. The vineyards run 130 to 190 meters above sea level on alluvial soils, tilted gently south. This is continental Croatia, not the Adriatic: cold winters, hot summers, and a river large enough to moderate both. Erdut farms 450 hectares, the largest contiguous vineyard in Croatia, with Grasevina alone on 280 of them.
The Wine
The fruit for this bottling comes from the Busija site at 140 meters, where mild slopes catch sun through the full day. Grapes are pressed and the must settles cold for 24 hours before racking to stainless, where fermentation runs 7 to 10 days at a controlled 15 to 18°C, a deliberately cool and slow ferment that protects the variety's floral top end. The wine then rests in a combination of stainless and old oak. Green apple, white peach, elderflower, lemon zest, and a faint chalky finish. Erdut recommends drinking it young, within two years, and that is honest advice rather than a hedge: this is built for freshness, not for cellaring. The liter format is the real argument. A full liter is a third more wine than a standard bottle, at a price most 750s cannot match, which makes it a house white in the literal sense.
The People
Erdut's winemaking traces to 1730, when Baron Johann Baptista Maximilian Zuany built the Old Cellar in the hills above the village, still the oldest cellar in Erdut. The estate passed to Ivan Kapistran Adamovich in 1778 and stayed with the Adamovich and Cseh families for roughly a century and a half. Ivan Kapistran II showed twelve bottles of Erdut wine at the 1855 Paris World Fair. Ervin Cseh, who married into the family and served as minister for Croatia and Slavonia in the Hungarian government from 1899 to 1905, built five glass-lined barrels in the old cellar and turned one of them into a private card room. The cellar still holds a 75,000-liter barrel, said to be the largest in active use anywhere, and it is always filled with Grasevina.
Food Pairing
Slavonian cooking is the native match: pork schnitzel with lemon, or cobanac, the paprika-heavy shepherd's stew, where the acidity resets the palate between spoonfuls. Roast chicken with garlic and herbs. Grilled river trout with brown butter and parsley. Fried potato-and-cheese pierogi, since the acid cuts dairy and starch cleanly. Buy two, keep one cold at all times, and stop thinking about what to open.
