The Land
Les Chatelots sits on the slope just above Aux Combottes, directly below the village of Chambolle-Musigny itself, wedged between the premier crus Les Feusselottes and Les Gruenchers. Chambolle's soils are sparer than neighboring Morey-Saint-Denis or Gevrey-Chambertin: limestone gravel at the surface over a thin layer of topsoil, ground that gives the village's wines their characteristic finesse rather than power. Barthod farms a quarter hectare here, vines now around 25 years old, a small enough parcel that the domaine can watch it closely through the season.
The Wine
100% Pinot Noir, partially destemmed, fermented with only native yeast. The slower start that comes with wild yeast gives the must two to five days of natural cold maceration before fermentation takes hold. After fermentation, the wine is racked into small barrels, 20 to 25% new oak, and aged around 20 months. The 2023 season demanded heavy green-harvesting, 30 to 50% of bunches dropped to manage yields, with some acetic rot near the forest edge sorted out at harvest, which began in early September. The result is crunchy and spiky, crisp red fruit with a morello cherry bite, a cherry-stone bitterness that gives the wine some grip, and a lift that carries through the finish.
The People
The Domaine Barthod-Noellat traces back to the late 1920s, a merger of two Chambolle families. Gaston Barthod took over direction in the 1950s, and his daughter Ghislaine began working alongside him in the 1980s before eventually taking over the estate herself, bringing new precision to both vineyard work and vinification while keeping the same regard for Chambolle's particular finesse. The domaine's holdings, 5.86 hectares split across some of the village's best sites, read like a map of Chambolle's premier crus: Fuees, Cras, Baudes, and Veroilles all border the grand cru Bonnes Mares, while Chatelots and Beaux Bruns act as counterpoints to each other in style.
Food Pairing
Duck breast with cherry sauce, mushroom-stuffed chicken thighs, a simple coq au vin, or a wedge of Époisses with crusty bread. This is a wine for the classic Burgundian table: earthy, structured dishes that meet the wine's tannin and acid halfway.
