The Land

This wine comes from the Colli Orientali del Friuli, the range of hills in Italy's far northeast that runs up to the Slovenian border, long regarded as one of the country's greatest white-wine terroirs. The Buri vineyard lies in the Buttrio area, on the region's signature soil, ponca: layered marl and sandstone laid down on an ancient seabed, poor and fast-draining, that gives Friulian whites their minerality and cut. The climate is a meeting point of cool Alpine air from the north and warmer Adriatic breezes from the south, which lets white grapes ripen slowly and hold their acidity. Friuli's eastern hills are, by wide agreement, one of the two or three finest white-wine zones in Italy.

The Wine

100% Chardonnay from the Buri vineyard. Chardonnay is not native to Friuli, but the region's ponca marl and cool, breezy climate suit it beautifully, giving a wine closer in spirit to white Burgundy than to sunnier New World styles. It is made in a fresh, precise style that keeps the focus on fruit and minerality rather than heavy oak. Expect white peach, pear, citrus, hazelnut, and white flowers, with a taut, saline mineral line running through a medium body and a long, chalky finish. Restrained and site-driven, this is Chardonnay that tastes of where it grew.

The People

Nec-otium is a Friuli négociant project with an unusual philosophy: each wine is grown and vinified in the cellar of the grower who farmed it, so every bottle stays true to its own place and hands. It comes from the world of Ronco del Gnemiz, one of Friuli's benchmark estates, run by Serena Palazzolo and Christian Patat. The Cav. Luigino Balozio wines are a project of the next generation of that family, farmed and made in the Colli Orientali with the same commitment to precise, mineral Friulian whites the family is known for.

Food Pairing

This is a versatile Chardonnay for the table. Pour it with roast chicken, with grilled or poached fish, with crab and scallops in butter, or with a creamy risotto or pasta. It works with soft and semi-hard cheeses and makes a fine aperitif. Serve it cool but not ice-cold so the texture and the fruit both come through. The kind of white that bridges an Italian dinner and a Burgundy lover's expectations.

Chardonnay, one of the world's most versatile and beloved white grape varieties, showcases a remarkable spectrum of styles, from the lean, mineral-driven expressions of Chablis in France to the rich, buttery, and oak-aged versions from California's Napa Valley. Its adaptability extends to cooler climates such as Burgundy, where it achieves elegance and complexity, and to regions like Australia's Yarra Valley, known for producing vibrant and fruit-forward renditions. This grape's ability to reflect its terroir, coupled with winemaking techniques, results in a wide array of profiles, including unoaked, crisp varieties with apple and citrus notes, to full-bodied wines with tropical fruit flavors and creamy textures.
