The Land
California is famous for big, ripe, sunny wines, which makes a pale, low-alcohol sparkling rose feel almost contrarian. It works because of where Scribe farms. The estate sits at the convergence of Carneros, Sonoma Valley, and Napa Valley, a cool pocket shaped by fog and marine air off San Pablo Bay, the wind that funnels through the Petaluma Gap, and the steep terrain of Arrowhead Mountain. That cooling influence keeps Pinot Noir fresh and low in sugar, exactly the raw material a good sparkling rose needs. The property itself is a historic 19th-century Sonoma homestead the Mariani family restored.
The Wine
A rose of estate-grown Pinot Noir made as a petillant naturel, the old ancestral method. The wine is bottled before its first fermentation finishes, with no added yeast or sugar, so the last of the fermentation completes inside the sealed bottle and traps the carbon dioxide as a soft, natural fizz. The result is dry, lightly sparkling, and often faintly cloudy, with bright red-berry and citrus fruit, a savory edge, and low alcohol. It is a rustic, honest style of bubbly, sparkling wine reduced to its most natural form.
The People
Scribe was founded in 2007 by brothers Andrew and Adam Mariani, who bought a run-down but historic Sonoma estate, one of the area's oldest winegrowing homesteads, and set about restoring both the land and the buildings. From the start their approach has been estate-focused and low-intervention, farming their own fruit and letting the cool site show through in fresh, energetic wines. The pet-nat is the most playful expression of that philosophy, a wine made to be opened casually rather than cellared.
Food Pairing
This is a brunch-to-aperitif bottle that also loves salty, fried food. Pour it with oysters, fried chicken, a charcuterie board, or fresh strawberries. Its dry fizz and bright acidity cut through richness and salt, while the low alcohol makes it easy to drink through a long afternoon. Serve it well chilled and open it gently; pet-nats can be lively.

While Burgundy remains its spiritual heartland, Pinot Noir has since traveled the globe, finding success in other cooler climates, notably in California, Oregon, New Zealand, and Germany. This grape is a challenge for any grower, as it requires specific conditions to show its best, and yet the wines it produces are capable of such a captivating and singular character.
