The Land

Grand Valley AVA runs along the Colorado River around Palisade, Colorado's oldest and largest wine appellation, at roughly 4,700 feet, where hot days and cold nights preserve acidity even in a warm desert climate. The Storm Cellar sources this Chenin Blanc from Grand Valley fruit rather than the winery's own high-elevation estate in the cooler West Elks AVA. Sandy, well-drained soils and a wide diurnal swing keep the grape's acidity intact through a long ripening season.

The Wine

100% Chenin Blanc, fermented dry and unoaked, 13% alcohol, bottled September 2025 with 6.9 g/L acidity. Aromas of quince, tart pear and honeysuckle carry through to a palate of honeydew, kiwi and freshly cut grass. Ripe but structured, built to show Chenin's texture without oak, and dry enough to work through a full meal. 115 cases produced.

The People

Jayme Henderson and Steve Steese left sommelier jobs in Denver in 2017 to found The Storm Cellar on Sunshine Mesa in Hotchkiss, in Colorado's West Elks AVA. The two run every part of the operation themselves, growing estate fruit and sourcing from other high-desert vineyards along the Western Slope. The Storm Cellar makes white and rose wines almost exclusively, and has grown into one of Colorado's most recognized producers in under a decade.

Food Pairing

Chenin's acid and ripe fruit make it a natural with green chile pork stew, grilled shrimp skewers with lime, a soft goat cheese and honey plate, or roasted acorn squash with sage.

Chenin Blanc, celebrated for its high acidity and versatility, finds its most iconic expressions in the Loire Valley of France and the sun-drenched vineyards of South Africa. In the Loire Valley, it's the backbone of an array of styles, from vibrant, dry whites to lusciously sweet wines, showcasing the grape's remarkable ability to reflect terroir and respond to winemaking techniques. Meanwhile, South Africa has embraced Chenin Blanc, locally known as Steen, producing wines that range from fresh and fruity to complex and age-worthy, further cementing the grape's global appeal and adaptability.
