The Land

Jamet’s 2022 Côte-Rôtie is sourced from a mosaic of lieux-dits across the appellation’s schist-dominated slopes, primarily on the northern end of the Côte Brune. These steep, terraced vineyards—ranging from 250 to 500 meters in elevation—face southeast and benefit from intense sun exposure tempered by the Rhône’s cooling mistral winds. Thin, rocky soils force the vines deep, concentrating the fruit and emphasizing mineral structure. This is classic northern Rhône terroir: austere, rugged, and perfectly suited to Syrah.

The Wine

100% Syrah, whole-cluster fermented with native yeasts, then aged 22 months in a mix of neutral and low-percentage new oak barrels. The 2022 vintage shows Jamet’s signature balance between aromatic lift and muscular structure. Bright black fruit, violets, olive, and smoked meat lead on the nose, while the palate is energetic, savory, and precise. Moderate extraction preserves freshness and length, with acidity driving a clean, persistent finish. A structured yet transparent Côte-Rôtie, built for aging but already showing detail and poise.

The People

Jean-Paul Jamet has long been one of the region’s benchmarks, known for blending multiple parcels rather than bottling single-vineyard wines—a choice that reflects his belief in Côte-Rôtie as a sum of its diverse parts. Now working alongside his son Loïc, the domaine continues its traditionalist approach: whole-cluster fermentation, restrained oak use, and a firm commitment to expressing site and vintage over stylistic embellishment. In a region that increasingly prizes polish, Jamet stays rooted in purity and precision.

The Rhône Valley is a diverse and historic wine region, divided into two distinct areas. The Northern Rhône is the birthplace of Syrah, with steep, terraced vineyards that produce some of the world's most revered wines, such as those from Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. The Southern Rhône is much more expansive, offering a wider range of styles, but typically based around Grenache-based blends, with wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape known for their complexity and power. While the region is celebrated for its reds, it also produces incredible textured whites, and as a whole the region displays the spectrum of French wine and the incredible differences that can come from small geographic changes.

Rhone Valley

Syrah is a dark-skinned grape of French origin, specifically from the Northern Rhône Valley, where it produces some of the world's most powerful and complex wines. Known as Shiraz in Australia, Syrah is capable of displaying a wide range of aromas and flavors. Cool climate Syrahs tend to express floral notes like violets, along with savory elements like olives, while those grown in warmer climates like Australia are more likely to show black pepper and dark fruit notes such as plum. The grape's versatility allows it to adapt to various climates and soil types, but it maintains its unique characteristics no matter where it is planted.
