The Land

The Russian River Valley is not one climate but a funnel. Each afternoon, cold Pacific air and fog pour in through the Petaluma Gap and up the river corridor from the coast, settling over the vines overnight and often lingering until late morning. Days warm up, nights drop hard, and the swing between them can reach 35 to 40 degrees. That is why Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley ripens to dark, ripe fruit while keeping the acidity that holds it together. Much of the valley's best Pinot grows on Goldridge sandy loam, a fine, free-draining soil laid down over an ancient seabed that keeps vigor modest. The AVA was established in 1983 and has become one of the defining Pinot Noir addresses in North America.

The Wine

Mon Premier Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2023 is a Sonoma red wine made inside the appellation, and the label means "my first." Expect what the Russian River Valley does with Pinot Noir in a cool year: black cherry, red raspberry, and cola, with forest floor and baking spice, a silky, medium-bodied middle, and bright acidity carrying a clean finish. 2023 was one of the coolest and latest California vintages in two decades. Heavy winter rain filled the soils, a mild summer slowed ripening, and Sonoma harvest started weeks behind normal; at least one Sonoma winery began picking on September 21, its latest start since 2011. The long hang time built flavor at lower sugar and favored freshness over heft.

The People

Mon Premier Wines describes itself simply: Sonoma wine, made in the Russian River Valley. The label publishes almost nothing beyond that. The name tells you the intent: a first wine, built on the grape and the valley that set the standard for California Pinot Noir. It is a straightforward way to taste what a cool, slow vintage does in this valley.

Food Pairing

Russian River Pinot Noir loves the table. Pan-seared salmon with a pinot and shallot reduction lets the acidity cut the rich fish while the cherry fruit meets the sauce. Roast chicken thighs with wild mushrooms and thyme lean into the wine's earthy side. Pork tenderloin with a dried cherry and balsamic glaze echoes the fruit and stands up to the silky tannin. For a weeknight, try a mushroom and Gruyère flatbread with caramelized onions. This is the Pinot to open when dinner is simple but you still want the wine to matter.

Sonoma County, located west of Napa Valley and stretching to the Pacific Ocean, is a large and diverse wine region in California. With a history of winemaking dating back to the 19th century, Sonoma's varied terroir allows it to grow grapes in multiple places throughout the region. Bordered by the Mayacamas Mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, the county encompasses a range of climates and soils. The Russian River Valley, known for its cool climate influenced by fog, is acclaimed for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Alexander Valley, further inland and warmer, excels with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sonoma Coast, a region directly influenced by the Pacific's cool breezes and fog, is gaining recognition for elegant, cool-climate wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This diverse landscape provides the fruit for an array of styles.

California - Sonoma County

Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned, notoriously difficult-to-grow, low-yielding grape that finds its ancestral home in Burgundy, France, where it produces some of the world's most elegant and nuanced wines. While Burgundy remains its spiritual heartland, Pinot Noir has since traveled the globe, finding success in other cooler climates, notably in California, Oregon, New Zealand, and Germany. This grape is a challenge for any grower, as it requires specific conditions to show its best, and yet the wines it produces are capable of such a captivating and singular character.
