The Land
Prepotto is the last corner of the Friuli Colli Orientali before Slovenia, and it is far better known for a peppery red grape than for white wine. Here the Judrio river cuts a closed valley about six kilometers long, roughly 40 kilometers from the Adriatic, with the Julian Prealps standing between the vines and the cold air off the Alps. Petrussa grows Sauvignon in two family sites. Bivio Romanutti is a 4.5-hectare parcel of clay and silt washed down from the surrounding hills; it runs slightly acidic and cold, which delays the start of the season, and the family singles it out for aromatic whites. Albana, down by the river, is warm, sandy alluvium that drains fast. Cool clay for tension and warm sand for ripeness frame this Sauvignon Blanc from Friuli.
The Wine
Petrussa Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from vineyards planted to several clones alongside massal selections, a mix meant to layer complexity rather than lean on a single aromatic profile. The family describes the wine as aromatically restrained by design, built to gain depth with time in bottle instead of leaping out of the glass. That makes it a different animal from the grapefruit-and-passion-fruit style of New Zealand. Expect a lightly herbal nose of sage, cut grass, and white peach, a savory, mineral middle with lemon pith and a little salinity, and a firm, dry finish. The 2024 season in northeastern Italy opened with a persistently wet spring that kept disease pressure high, followed by summer heat, so careful canopy work and sorting mattered more than usual.
The People
The Petrussa family has worked this land in Albana di Prepotto since the early 1900s, when Giuseppe Petrussa first built a living around the vines in the years before the world wars. Celestino carried the farm forward and in 1987 handed it to his sons, Gianni and Paolo. Neither brother trained for this; both were educated in other fields and chose the vineyard anyway. Today Gianni runs the vines and Paolo runs the cellar, working from the family address on Via Albana. Their stated aim is not a showy Friuli white but a wine that carries the character of one place, Prepotto, and the farming culture that grew up around it. This Sauvignon is the clearest everyday window into that idea, and the easiest way into the family's range.
Food Pairing
Keep this one cold and put it next to green things. Asparagus risotto finished with lemon zest and grated Montasio works because the wine's herbal edge meets the asparagus while its acidity trims the cheese. Frico, the Friulian crisp of potato and Montasio, needs exactly this kind of cutting freshness. Try a goat cheese and chive frittata with a peppery arugula salad, where the savory, grassy side mirrors the herbs. Pan-seared trout with brown butter, capers, and parsley lets the wine's salinity play off the capers. This is the bottle for a Wednesday when the farmers market haul is mostly green.
