The Land

Sangiovese for Casamatta doesn't come from a single vineyard or even a single hillside. Bibi Graetz sources young vines scattered across the hills stretching from north of Florence, near his home base in Fiesole, south toward Siena. That range gives him room to pick sites for freshness rather than prestige, favoring cooler parcels over the warmer valley floors that tend to produce heavier Sangiovese. The result is fruit built for immediacy rather than aging, picked to preserve acidity and bright red fruit character over power.

The Wine

100% Sangiovese, vinified entirely in stainless steel to keep the fruit pure and untouched by oak. The wine leads with fresh red cherry and red currant, backed by soft, easy tannins and bright acidity that keeps it lively rather than heavy. There's none of the structure or ambition of Graetz's flagship Testamatta here by design: Casamatta is built to be opened the day you buy it, not cellared.

The People

Bibi Graetz grew up in Fiesole, in the hills above Florence, where his family has made wine since the 1800s from the grounds of Castello di Vincigliata, a medieval castle his parents bought more than 60 years ago. Trained as a painter rather than a winemaker, he came to wine self-taught in the 1990s after his family's longstanding vineyard contracts expired, and founded his own label in 2000. His top wines, Testamatta and Colore, built his reputation by blending fruit from old, mixed-variety vineyards in a style that broke from Chianti orthodoxy. Casamatta, whose name translates to "crazy house," is the entry point into that same philosophy: less serious, less expensive, but made with the same instinct for freshness and drinkability.

Food Pairing

This is a wine for weeknight cooking: pizza with tomato and basil, a simple plate of pasta with red sauce, grilled sausages, or a burger with fresh mozzarella. Its bright acidity and soft tannins mean it works as easily on its own as it does with food.

Tuscany is one of Italy’s most iconic wine regions, anchored by historic regions like Chianti and Montalcino, where Sangiovese thrives in clay-limestone soils and varying elevations. Chianti Classico produces medium-bodied, savory reds, while Montalcino’s warmer, drier conditions give rise to the powerful and long-lived Brunello. Along the Tuscan coast, regions like Bolgheri emerged in the late 20th century with the rise of Super Tuscans—often blends of international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown in marine-influenced soils. While overwhelmingly known for red wines, Tuscany is also home to great classic whites grown in San Gimignano and modern whites often made with French grape varieties.
