The Land
Potensac sits in the northern Médoc, the part of the peninsula most people drive through on the way to somewhere else. The address is Ordonnac, north of Saint-Estèphe, and the appellation is plain Médoc rather than Haut-Médoc. But the vineyard occupies one of the high points of the area, on ridges of clay and gravel sitting over limestone bedrock, with two shallow valleys draining the slopes. The name Médoc itself comes from medio aquae, in the middle of the waters, and in country this wet, a rise like Potensac's is what lets vines drain and ripen. Clay over limestone holds moisture and keeps the wine fresh; gravel in the mix gives Cabernet the drainage it needs. The estate covers 60 hectares, and the vines average 55 to 60 years, with some centenarian Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc still in production.
The Wine
Château Potensac 2023 is 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc, a heavier share of Franc than most Médoc blends carry, and that shows in the lift and the graphite edge. Harvest ran from September 18 to 29. Bud break came early, in late March, May and June were hot, and regular June rain kept disease pressure high. Two heat waves, in late August and early September, sped up ripening, and the team timed picking to stay ahead of the September rains. It was the first Potensac vintage sorted with optical and water-bath sorting, which strips out underripe and damaged berries. The wine aged 12 months in French oak, 20% new, and came in at 13.5% alcohol. Cassis, black cherry, pencil shavings and a little tobacco, a tight, dense texture, spicy tannins and fresh acidity that carry it well past the price.
The People
Potensac belongs to Jean-Hubert Delon, the sole proprietor of Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien, and it comes into the family through the female line. Delon inherited it from his paternal grandmother, Georgette Liquard, and it has stayed within the same family across generations. That matters because Potensac is run by the same team and to the same standards as one of the most closely watched estates in Bordeaux, which also makes Clos du Marquis in Saint-Julien and Château Nénin in Pomerol. The Delons introduced a second wine, Chapelle de Potensac, in 2002 to tighten selection for the grand vin. In 2023 they added optical sorting. The result is the northern Médoc treated as seriously as Saint-Julien, and it has long been the reference point for what the Médoc appellation can do.
Food Pairing
Potensac has the structure for cold-weather cooking. Braise beef short ribs in red wine with carrots and thyme until they fall apart; the tannin and acid cut the richness of the braising liquid. A cassoulet with duck confit, garlic sausage and white beans gives the Cabernet Franc something savory and fatty to push against. Lentils du Puy with seared Toulouse sausage and a mustard vinaigrette works on a weeknight. For something casual, a grass-fed burger with blue cheese and caramelized onions. This is the Bordeaux to buy by the half case, open one now, and forget the rest in the basement for a decade.

Red Blend is a catch-all for wines built from more than one red grape, a practice as old as winemaking itself and central to many of the world's most celebrated bottles. Blending lets a producer balance what a single variety cannot deliver alone: structure from one grape, perfume from another, flesh and color from a third. Bordeaux, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rioja, and the old field blends of Portugal's Douro all fall under this umbrella, as do countless wines from growers who care more about the finished wine than about varietal labeling. Expect enormous range in style, from light and herbal to dense and age-worthy, depending entirely on origin and intent.
