The Land

Durigutti's Pie de Monte Malbec is from the rugged landscape of Finca Zarlenga, nestled in Los Árboles, a subregion of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina. Perched at 1,300 meters above sea level, this vineyard benefits from the extreme altitude, where the intense sunlight and cooler temperatures create a perfect environment for cultivating elegant Malbec. The soil, a blend of alluvial deposits with a high concentration of limestone, contributes to the wine’s unique minerality and structure, while the region’s dramatic diurnal temperature shifts ensure vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors.

The Wine

This Malbec is an elegant expression of Malbec, embodying the essence of high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza. On the nose, it reveals deep aromas of dark berries, plum, and crushed violet, intertwined with subtle hints of graphite and spices. This wine is nearly indistinguishable from Northern Rhône Syrah! The palate is rich and layered, offering flavors of ripe black fruits, cocoa, and a touch of minerality, all supported by firm yet velvety tannins. A long, persistent finish with a fresh acidity reflects the careful vinification process, which emphasizes minimal intervention to preserve the wine’s natural character. Incredibly value and under the radar wine!

The People

Durigutti Family Winemakers, led by brothers Héctor and Pablo Durigutti, bring decades of experience and a deep connection to Mendoza’s terroir. Their approach to winemaking is rooted in respect for the land to showcase the true potential of each organically farmed vineyard. The Pie de Monte Malbec is a reflection of their philosophy—crafted with minimal intervention, allowing the unique qualities of Finca Zarlenga to shine through.

Mendoza is Argentina’s largest and most celebrated wine region, tucked into the foothills of the Andes in the country’s west. Sun-drenched days, cool mountain nights, and mineral-rich soils create ideal conditions for robust yet balanced wines. Although Malbec is the star here—yielding lush dark fruit and refined tannins—varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Torrontés also thrive. With each sub-region (from Luján de Cuyo to the Uco Valley) bringing its own distinct personality, Mendoza offers a vibrant tapestry of high-altitude vineyards that continue to elevate Argentine wine on the global stage.

Argentina - Mendoza

Malbec may have originated in France—where it features in Bordeaux blends, thrives in Cahors, and even appears in parts of the Loire Valley—but it’s become synonymous with Argentinian wine culture. This grape typically delivers concentrated dark fruit flavors like blackberry and black plum, accented by a subtle peppery spice and delicate violet aromas. French Malbec tends to be more structured, while its Argentine counterpart emphasizes plush tannins and robust fruit. Across both Old World and New, Malbec captivates with its velvety depth and distinctive charm.
