The Land
The Douro's reputation rests on dark, powerful reds from the hot schist slopes along the river. This one comes from higher, cooler ground: old vineyards on the plateau of the Cima Corgo around Alijó, where Tiago Sampaio's parcels sit between 500 and 700 meters. The soils mix schist with granite and clay, unusual in a region defined by schist, and granite tends to give a lighter frame and fresher acidity. Altitude slows ripening, so the grapes hang longer and reach maturity at lower sugar. The result is an old-vine red from the Douro built more on freshness than on weight, which counts for a lot in a vintage like 2020.
The Wine
The Uivo Vinhas Velhas Tinto is a field blend of traditional Douro red varieties planted together in old vineyards and picked together, among them Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca and Mourisco. The grapes are gently destemmed and foot-trodden, and the wine then ages at length in older barrels before a further rest in bottle. The 2020 is reaching the market six years after harvest, which says a lot about how the wine is built. It was a scorching year: January through mid-September was the warmest on record in Portugal, budbreak came three weeks early, and July ran 3.5°C above average. Yields fell sharply, and red picking in the Douro began on September 1. Long aging has softened the tannins, leaving red and black forest berries, savory spice and a dry, mineral finish.
The People
Every vine Tiago Sampaio farms came to him through family. None were bought. Those inherited plantings on the Alijó plateau, the oldest block around 90 years old, are the backbone of Folias de Baco, which he founded in 2007. Across about 20 hectares in eight plots within a five-kilometer radius, he farms organically, seeds cover crops of legumes and barley, and sprays kaolin clay to protect fruit from sun and pests. When he replants, he chooses Rupestris du Lot rootstock for the acidity it holds in the grapes, a decision that traces straight back to his doctoral research on rootstock physiology at Oregon State. The Vinhas Velhas bottlings are where his patience with old vines shows most clearly, and they are the most serious wines in a range better known for pet nat.
Food Pairing
A mature, savory Douro red with soft tannin wants slow-cooked food. Pork shoulder rubbed with garlic, smoked paprika and bay, roasted low until it pulls apart, meets the spice in the wine with its own. Seared duck breast with a tart cherry sauce echoes the forest berries while the acidity cuts the fat. A mushroom and farro stew with rosemary and a little red wine in the pot brings out the earthy side. And a wedge of aged Serra da Estrela or Manchego to finish. This is the bottle for a slow Sunday braise, when the house smells like dinner by 3 p.m.
