The Land
Every prestige signal in modern Barolo points toward the single vineyard, which makes Le Vigne a deliberate argument in the other direction: it is a blend, and the components sit in five different communes. Vignane in Barolo, Merli in Novello, Le Coste di Monforte in Monforte d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, and Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba. That spread straddles the fault line that organizes the whole appellation. The western communes sit on Tortonian Sant'Agata Fossili marls, finer and more calcareous, the soils associated with perfume and softer tannin. Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga run on the older, sandier Serravallian Lequio formation, which gives structure, tannic grip and length. Each site differs in altitude, exposure and vine material, and the blend is built to carry both halves of Barolo in one glass.
The Wine
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2022 is 100% Nebbiolo, harvested September 26 through October 6, roughly two weeks ahead of normal. Each of the five vineyards is destemmed, lightly crushed, given about a day of warm maceration under CO2, then fermented separately by indigenous yeasts in open-topped steel tanks for close to 28 days. Malolactic fermentation runs in 500-liter French oak casks immediately after, and the wine stays in those casks for 24 months, 25% new, before 18 months in bottle. The lots are only assembled at the end, in the old Langhe tradition of assemblage. 2022 was a drought year across Barolo, with heat stress pushing picking early and yields down 20 to 45%, but late September rain restored balance. Compact and tightly wound: dark fruit, licorice, violet, pepper and cinnamon, with ripe tannin that runs long. It needs eight to ten years.
The People
Sandrone's reputation was made in the 1990s, the decade when Barolo tore itself in half over barriques and short macerations, and the estate got filed under modernist largely because it labeled single vineyards and used French oak. Look at the cellar and the label never fit. The casks are 500-liter tonneaux, not 225-liter barriques, and only a quarter are new. Fermentations are spontaneous and long, 28 days, in open steel. There are no rotofermenters and no thermovinification. What Sandrone actually built was a third position: modern precision applied to a traditional extraction, which is why the wines read as classical Nebbiolo rather than as a style statement. Luciano never joined either camp, and the family has kept it that way.
Food Pairing
A multi-commune Barolo like this one wants a table, not a tasting. Agnolotti del plin in a light butter and sage sauce lets the violet and red fruit come forward. Braised short ribs, bones in, reduced down with onion and a splash of the same wine, give the tannin something to grab. Roast guinea hen rubbed with sage and pancetta bridges the floral and savory sides at once. Finish with a plate of Castelmagno and a spoon of acacia honey. This is the bottle for the night you cook all afternoon and nobody checks a phone.
