The Land

Bonzek Vineyard sits in the Grand Valley AVA near Palisade, Colorado's original wine appellation along the Colorado River, where afternoon heat and cold desert nights let aromatic whites hang on the vine without losing acidity. The Storm Cellar draws this Gewurztraminer from Grand Valley fruit, distinct from its own estate plantings in the cooler, higher West Elks AVA near Hotchkiss.

The Wine

100% Gewurztraminer, fermented in a bone-dry Alsatian style with just 0.3 g/L residual sugar and 13% alcohol. Rose petal and lychee dominate the nose, carrying through to a lean, dry finish with 6.1 g/L acidity holding the aromatics in check. Bottled April 2026. 105 cases produced.

The People

Jayme Henderson and Steve Steese founded The Storm Cellar in 2017 after leaving sommelier careers in Denver, building a vineyard and tasting room on Sunshine Mesa in Hotchkiss. They work almost exclusively in white and rose wine, growing and sourcing fruit from across Colorado's Western Slope, and have grown into one of the state's most recognized producers in under ten years.

Food Pairing

The wine's dry, aromatic style calls for food with some spice or richness: a roasted turkey sandwich, grilled bratwurst with mustard, spicy pad thai, or a green curry.
